Magnets

Some of you might know i’ve recently been buying up the parts I need to carry out a service on my 2001 CBR.

I came across something I’d never seen or heard of before:

A magnetic sump plug! Apparently as the oil washes over it it catches minute microns of steel shavings which would otherwise cause havoc - now im no expert but wasnt the oil filter supposed to do that?

Besides, the sump plug is the same as a normal one but with a magnet on top - errrrmmmmmm how solid is that magnet on there? what if that falls off!!!

Anyone trust these things or has any experience of them?

If the shavings are in the sump then their next journey will be via the oil strainer into the oil pump and then into the engine, the oil filter is usually a circuit after the oil pump, returning back to the sump.

If you can get a magnetic sump plug then it would be a good idea.

thing is with those magnetic sump plugs is that there anodised thigns and i dunno if it will come off with ease when ya need it to.

ahhh HA! I knew it was all a scam!

Eh?:w00t:

Magnetic sump plugs are nothing more than a steel sump plug that has been magnetized… nothing is stuck on it’s one piece. The same as a magnetic screwdriver is just a normal screwdriver thats been swiped on a magnet.

How do you anodize steel SMF? You anodize aluminuim.

You will be amazed at the size of the slivers that you will find from a gearbox…they aint microns:w00t:

magnetic sump bolts do there jod & are worth having them:)

my 660smc has 2x, 13mm magnetic bolts and a 19mm meshed bolt.

every 500miles i do a oil change & i will always find some shavings on them

also mine have magnetic metal rods inserted in the bolt but it will not come lose:)

bein such a ktm nerd here is a pic of a spare one i got:D

I have them in my car, and believe me, the old mini A-series needs it!
I’m sure it can’t do any harm on a modern engine.

Ford fit them to the old Sierra differentials and in my car it collects a load of swarf. I’ve used them in the past in cars and they do collect a lot.

OK OK you’ve persuaded me. Wanna sell me your spare? (Assuming it’ll fit my 2001 CBR600 sump)

there worth having :)not sure if ktm ones would fit on the honda? but if you go direct to honda you’ll pay no more that £8 tops

give DMC (dalston motorcycles) a call they can usually get the parts next day 02072492360

btw use new copper washers on the bolt but most of all do NOT over tighten the bolt (like i did):pinch: most are no more than hand tight

Yeah - i ordered a new washer along with the other stuff from David silver spares - however, I was expecting the thing to be copper colour and collapsable. Mine doesnt look like that - but like this - is this ok? If you look closely it looks like its made of two metals placed together!

PS - with 46000 miles on her - i think its a bit late in the day to start putting damage limitation devices on her! lol besides, it may turn out that she already has one fitted!

you sure you did’nt drop a polo in the box:D

i cant tell by the pic but if its a soft compound metal then it will bed in ok. just dont over tighten the bolt;)

My 660 used to pick up all sorts on those plugs. Bits of the main bearings most annoyingly. :frowning:

The superduke has a mag on the sump plug and a mag on the oil tank drain plug.

cheers fellas - might just get one then.
