Reading July’s RiDE and there is mention of “An occasional drop… of light oil” in the ignition barrel to keep it working properly.
My key gives me agro sometimes and think i will give this a go soon but what is “light oil” are we talking wd 40 ( not an oil i know), “3 in 1”, or something more like motor/gear oil?
Thanks guys
You are better off not putting oil in a lock as all it does is encourage build up of grit and metal filings which is what causes locks to stick in the first place. You need a dry lube like silicon lube which you can buy at Maplin.
graphite powder is the best in my opinion … you can buy it at a few hardware shops or ask at local locksmiths
or get scraping a few pencils into a pot & rub the key with a pencil …
Agree that graphite powder is the locksmith’s solution, but I mentioned the silicon lube as it is easier to get hold of and has other applications such as switches.
Graphite is conductive, so might mess up your ignition. I would NOT recommend puffing graphite powder into your lock!!

WD40 works fine for me…use it on all my locks, ignition, seat, panniers, disc, cable etc
