What has happened is the ground has become supersaturated with water most likely from excessive rain. Because the water cannot drain away (due to for example an impermeable clay layer), it causes the internal resistance of the earth to approach zero. The result is the ground becomes fluid and the effect of gravity causes the earth to slip and the result is a massive landslide.
There are cases where the landslide becomes self lubricating and the result is a 200mph million ton river of liquid mud which 40 ton boulders will float on.
Extremely destructive. And a example of the destructive power of the natural world.
