http://darrenbourne.co.uk/killspills/html/london_rally_2005.html

From MCNNinjas:

The Second annual KillSpills rally takes place from the Ace Café London on the 10th September. I know we will get a lot of support from this site.

We are asking all riders to arrive at the Ace for 11am and the rally will set off for Westminster at 13.00 hours.

The first 1,500 riders will receive a goodie bag containing messages from the KillSpills Team, information on Bikesafe London plus other bits and bobs. Also the first 1,500 riders will receive a complementary gift from Bennetts Insurance. These gifts include a light weight Bennetts paddock jacket or a small radio with ear piece to fit under your lid or something else (but I don’t know what it is). I am assured by the BMF that they have received a considerable number of the paddock jackets. The Bennetts Babes will be dishing out the free gifts.

Also the local Major will be in attendance to start the rally on its way and the Lib Dem Transport Spokesman will meet the KS Team at Westminster.

We will be making the KillSpills / BMF Award 2005 for “Achievement in reducing diesel spills” to Asda Distribution for all the work they have done to reduce diesel spills.

Below are notes that you will receive on the day. One is a briefing for you as a rider, the other is a note which we will be handing out to the public at Westminster.

Also you will receive a KillSpills flag and sticker to put on your bike.

Last years rally was fantastic, this year its going to be much better.

So come and join in a fun filled day and help us to deliver an important road safety message to Tony Blair.

Cheers

Steve

Marshals wearing the white t shirts are there for YOUR safety, to keep the rally to the carriageway designated by the Police. They will also act as a buffer between you and other traffic. You must ensure that YOU always ride to the LEFT HAND SIDE of these marshals. The Police bikes will keep to the right hand side of the Marshals and will be riding past at high speed. THE SECOND ANNUAL KILLSPILLS RALLY
10TH SEPTEMBER 2005

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

This rally is about diesel spillage. Diesel spills are a danger to all road users, from pedestrians like you, to motorcyclists like us. Car, lorry, van, bus drivers and not forgetting pedal cyclists, are all affected. DIESEL SPILLS ARE LETHAL.

Last year’s KillSpills rally attracted over 750 riders. We handed in a 10,146 signature petition, a 22 page detailed report and 7 point action plan to Prime Minister Tony Blair, covering the dangers diesel spills pose to all road users. But nothing has changed.

Diesel spills occur when the vehicles tank is either overfilled, the filler cap is not refitted correctly or the seals are worn. As unbelievably simple as this sounds; sadly it’s TRUE!

Diesel is as slippery as black ice and almost impossible to detect night, especially on wet roads. Motorcyclists have grown to rely on their sense of smell, which is one advantage we have over car drivers. Official Government figures show that a motorcyclist is twice as likely to be involved in a serious or fatal accident as a result of oil and diesel on the road compared with ice or snow!

KillSpills is a nationwide voluntary organisation campaigning to increase public awareness of the dangers of diesel spills. This year we welcome the support and sponsorship of the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) in reinforcing our message and raising awareness with diesel users, vehicle manufacturers, oil companies and retailers.

Diesel users have a duty of care to other road users; spilling diesel should be considered as anti-social as driving a defective vehicle, driving uninsured, drink-driving or speeding.
The KillSpills Action Plan - the Government are asked to:

  1. Display warning signs at filling stations on the dangers of overfilling
  2. Highlight the dangers of diesel spills in the Highway Code
  3. Use the THINK! campaign to get the diesel spill message across to the public
  4. Lobby in Europe for a European wide solution
  5. Government Departments / Local Authorities to lead by example
  6. Introduce a road safety hotline for spills to be reported to, or advise people to ring 999
  7. Issue guidelines to the emergency services relating to treatment of diesel spillage.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Visit http://www.killspills.org.uk/ and add your voice to the many thousands who are supporting us, a few of the many and varied organisations that are supporting our campaign are listed below. Remember, we are here, campaigning for YOUR safety too.

THINK! Diesel spills KILL, do your bit to improve road safety and save lives!

Needless to say, the LB staff will be going! This is definately something we should all support, regardless of biking interest or which way we each get out of bed. Diesel kills!

With Jay on that one, probably going if nothing important pops up!

-Hennessy

You can count me in, It will be nice to meet some of you guys…

Should be there unless emergency crops up.

Or it’s raining in which case I’ll be there in spirit.

DITTO that Jay

I’ll be there from 9am as I am marshalling, watch out for a little bloke on a bright orange Z1000 flying by on your right en route to Westminster

I suggest that us LB’ers meet up at the Ace, at about 12pm, as the rally is at 1pm. We normally congregate by the Ace Cafe door. You should be able to recognise Foxy and I by her being a tall foxy looking lady, and I normally have a big camera in my hand. Come and say hello! We’re working hard on getting bike stickers for this event as well.

Might make it down for this!

Hope to make this one if i can wriggle out of going to Legoland on Saturday with the other arf’s cousins

Went to the first one and my Rad sprung a leak so made it as far as the ace then got towed home

The bennets babes will be in attendance. Jay lots of pics please!

Went to this today, here are some pics

Hey BigGus! Didn’t know you were there, didn’t see you… Doh! Nice pictures, thanks for sharing. There’s a gallery up now as well.

I had meant to be there by 12, but ran a little late, by time i’d had a drink & a slash time was marching on.

Yay, there’s me on my Zed 4th pic down

Great day, great riding by all, great turnout, cack weather…you can’t have it all.

Thanks to all those who turned up, reckon it was about 2500 bikes in total, I know coz when I shut the roads it took about 20 minutes for you lot to pass by!

2500 bikes whoa! Maybe we could organise a mass rev-limiter-bouncing next year!

Good work with the marshalling. Bet it felt good roaring down the fast lane?? Were you making siren noises in your lid ?

I’ve got few pics too

You should of been doing that anyway

Marshalling was a great buzz, I was singing in my lid LOL!!!

I recognise your 7, you gave me a nod a couple of times didn’t you.
