Done for a gsxr 1100 so will prob differ for other bikes.

Why bother? Unless you hide the wiring really carefully, it just makes it easier for some scr0te to start your bike without wrecking the ignition lock.

Doe this response mean that I’m getting old? I really don’t see the point of a keyless ignition system on a bike.

I had bought one for my car, but found out it invalidates your insurance as its an illegal device, as its against the law to have a vehicle running without someone in or on it, something like that.

I know its favoured by people with garages who wish to warm up their bikes b4 they ride off, but I dont see the point in having one on a bike. Having one on a car so its nice and warm inside b4 you drive off for work in the snow I can understand, lol

being able to warm the bike up fully is a bonus but was actually thinking more just in terms of security

i’ve been an idiot on more than one occassion leaving my key in the ignition - was furious with myself for it. I know for a fact mates have done this also. I’m really paranoid about it and this has not happened for a long time but guess it only takes one time when you’re in a hurry, have to readjust the position of the bike etc for your routine to be broken and the key left.

no key in the ignition means that that couldn’t happen. not convinced this is necessarily the solution tho, just curious

the clifford alarm system appears to have remote start - presumably if thats thatcham approved then it wouldn’t invalidate insurance?

Did you see the article in MCN yesterday? I believe it is all about said subject (I haven’t read it yet).

Ive done it a few times aswell and it makes your stomach turn when you think of the possibilitie…
What I now do is have one of those key hodler things around my neck and as soon as i stop the engine i clip the key to it.

I was going to suggest a stretchy keyring! Much cheaper than trying to fit keyless ignition!

all the ones I have seen, still require you to insert your key to use the vehicle to prevent theft, ie to stop someone just jumping on the bike or in the car and moving off!

They normally work by starting the vehicle in neutral, but to engage 1st gear and move off requires the key in the ignition or the vehicle shuts down and alarms

if I become a courier then maybe, otherwise that looks daft

I do what flight does, and its fine generally.

cheers goose, assumed you’d have to use the key for the steering lock but didnt know about keeping the key in place.

there’s a new system that i think suzuki have made that has an electronic key card in your pocket and doesn’t require a key at all. looks cool as you like

Looked into this when i had my 03 R6 and with the alarms with remote start i got the same answer from several companies i spoke to which was basicly about the factory immobilser it needsto recognise the chip in the key to start and because of this it couldnt be done, they didnt want to start ripping everything apart to see if there was a way around it.

covering there own arse i guess… there probably is away around it but then your talking money or possibly a new “blank” ecu…

but now im in territory i know nothing about… let me know how you get on JB

why dont you just get one of the strechy keyring things attach one end to your other end to bike keys jobs done, as you walk off you get pulled back

spidermonkey, i think there’s an echo in here?

Don’t worry mate…If you did leave your keys in the ignition and someone rode off on your bike, you’ll see it again.

comes standard with some renaults and mercedes ie cars, you have a electronic card in your pocket and a button on the dashboard to start the ignition on the car, complete keyless!

Worked at a Renault dealership for a while and used to get at least one punter a week coming in with a keycard that didn’t work. Keycard would normally be attached to a huge bunch of keys and the internal PCB would get bent out of shape by them. Another good reason why bike keys work. They don’t need batteries.

Never keep your alarm keyfob on the same keyring as your bike keys. It’s splashproof at best (yes, even the clear rubber Datatool ones!) and doesn’t like bouncing off your top yolk at high frequency either. Buy a cheap carabiner clip from Milletts, put your keys on separate rings and clip them into the carabiner when not in use. I have a key and rubber fob for ignition, another ring with lock/alarm keys on and a third with an LED torch and my oil filler tool on it.

Have you thought about one of those stretchy keyrings?
