K5 1000 Rebuild - V2

Thats looking good mate can’t wait to see it when it’s all done. When are you aiming to have it back on the road for?

It’s done Terry, I’ve been riding it today. VERY glad to have it back on the road. Will post up some pictures when we get a half decent day (dry and bright), though god knows when that’ll be

Result bet it was nice to ride it give it some welly and listen to that gorgeous exhuast note!

Sure was, Terry! I love it!

The last few items are coming in, which will finish it off. Whilst the frame wasn’t damaged in the accident, I came across these protectors and remembered what a gravel-trap at Rockingham did to one of my previous bikes once, whilst doing a trackday in near-freezing conditions (doh!). Carbon frame protectors from Germany. Took bloody ages to arrive, but happy they’re here now. Will install them sometime soon.

Jay, are they Motorace frameguards ?

I just got some, from Motorace in Slovenia for £91 inc

What are you going to fix them with - acid free silicone, which one, from where ??

Hey Kao5, yeah, Motorace, guess we saw the same eBay auctions, eh? These came from Germany though, and a little cheaper. I too am confused how you’re meant to fix them! They came with no glue. I’m going to have to read up on it though, as I don’t want to use anything that will damage the frame paint when it comes to take them off, and using none, or too light a glue could have them come away in a spill, which is what they’re there for, to protect the frame.

Hrm, I think I have some marine glue left over somewhere, that’d be strong enough, though I don’t know about getting them off after… Could use double-sided duck-tape, that stuff is incredible, but not sure it’ll hold up in a spill, heh.

“Hey Kao5, yeah, Motorace, guess we saw the same eBay auctions, eh? [Smile]”
Yes, love a bargain…

“These came from Germany though, and a little cheaper”

!! git, thanks for ruining my day…

I spoke to them at length, acid free silicone is the thing, you can get it off, but the acid in most silicone eats metal…so acid free is used in electrical applications [so it dont eat the contacts…] and maplins was my 1st port of call till I got distracted/work/life intervened.

Motorace offer lots of carbon … 1000K5…E615 [£440] for fairing, seat, undertray…almost an investment…

I have a full suzuki price list, .xls plus offer of up to 50% discount on multiple deals from motorace

Ah, thanks for the tip. I’ll have a look and see where my nearest Maplin is then. Don’t show me the list, I can’t get anything more to the bike, this REALLY is it, nothing more This rebuild has cost me a bloody fortune.

Cant wait to see pics Jay, should look well trick !!

Very sweet looking K5 liking it.

Look forward to seeing etc, so are you a track day addict or race etc?

Hey Bonus, thanks fella. I’m no racer, I just love trackdays! Can’t get enough (well I can, I either run out of money, or holiday allowance). I get a lot of satisfaction from building customised bikes like this, and have done for the last few I’ve owned.

This arrived this morning, all thanks to my buddy in Florida, Esemes, which I’m hugely pleased with, as they’ve been some time coming, and I’m not the most patient of people! Enclosed is a pair of Brembo SBK discs (will make the bike haul-up much harder, especially when complimented by the Brembo race master-cylinder, custom derlin frame and swingarm protectors and some Stomp grip-pads to make it a bit easier to cling on when ragging it at the track! My free-time is limited at the moment though with lots of LB work going on behind the scenes, so I’m not sure when they’ll all get fitted, but for now, here’s a snapshot:

Gag!

Beautiful.

Jay, it’s awesome. Worlds fail me, except it was good to see the K5 back on the road last night.

Encountered a problem; they don’t fit. The bolt-pattern is for the 2001-2004 model 1000’s, not the K5. Bummer. Dissapointed big style! Will most likely have to sell them on (interested njs71??), or think about aftermarket wheels, which have the correct bolt-pattern. Mistake was made at the source, but these aren’t the sort of items you can send back for a refund.

Maybe you can get replacement centres? Or get the original holes welded and redrill?? Just a thought…

Lookin smart Jay now i want one for next year…

Thanks Rich! The bolt pattern is VERY different, there’s no chance of getting these modified, nor would I want to, they’re the finest discs you can get, this side of MotoGP’s carbon items. I’ll keep hold of them until something comes up, as they’re very special items and would rather have them fitted, if possible! Hrm… maggies…

Never heard of a better reason for some nice after market magnesium wheels

Tell me about it… But it’ll have to wait, too many things on the go at the moment, and I need to take time to step back and see where I want things to go.

Yep hear what you are saying Jay, I want Ohlins forks and triple trees, and I also want to do a three day track day in Spain, bike flown down etc. Also this chap I know has a place in southern France between three tracks and he says we can have it cheap. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHH FFS SCCCHHHTTTOOOPPPPPPPP this bank account is not ready yet!!!

Think the three dayer is gonna win.

Had another delivery today, a replacement clutch lever, the fold-up CRG, adjustable-span version. Very nice item, well made and allows for the correct span adjustment, and bite-point of the clutch. Felt motivated to give her a wash as well, ready for tomorrow night, so took some snaps as well. Also new are the Stomp grip pads on the tank, and some LB stickers up front. Unfortunately, I’ve just noticed a small crack in the screen, which I have no idea about how it got there! Bummer, it’s brand new!

No news on the discs, they won’t be making an appearance any time soon Though the process did allow me to service the calipers and note that I need new pads soon, so need to do some research into which ones are the daddy. Carbon Loraine’s did me proud on the K4 750, on road and track, so will look there first.

She’s not finished yet, there’s still a new RHS scoop to go on, and the carbon frame protectors, both of which should make an appearance over the Christmas break. I’ve also got a Brembo front brake reservoir, which I may or may not fit, but if I do, it requires a custom hanger, though will allow me to use some proper clear race hose. A small point I know, but I’m big fan of attention to detail!

Jay have you seen those Pazzo levers on Speedycom, similar to CRG and I think they come in the standard and 'shorty length variety…I have ordered the short black ones with black adjusters.
