Has something changed recently regarding motorcycle mods and insurance quotes?
I’ve just recently renewed my ER6f’s policy and I’ve noticed many insurance websites seem to have become quite stingy when it comes to mods.
I was asked to pay over £140 just for declaring heated grips and a stainless cosmetic-only exhaust. Also I’ve noticed many insurance websites including MCN compare have removed their mod section.
This is a third party only quote.
Anyone else notice this or am I just looking in the wrong places?
Swinton, Tesco compare & MCN.
Regardless my bike is totally stock now cough and I’m £140 richer.
It’s almost like “the EU anti tamper legislation never worked so lets charge them through their teeth instead”
I know with car insurance that there is no payout on the policy on theft with undeclared cosmetic mods as the vehicle was considered an unsecured extra risk. Anything that makes the bike more nickable will mean it is more expensive to insure. Theft being the main risk the insurers are covering themselves for these days on bikes.
Some of the mods they want you to list are stuff like heated grips and Scottoilers, which are hardly in the same league as a big bore kit and nitrous!
Sorry should of mentioned. This was on a 3rd party only quote.
Good luck proving there were even mods on there when its been stolen. If it gets recovered who’s to say you put the mods on there (if they are even on the bike)? All speculative. If you have an accident don’t be surprised when your bike gets repaired with OEM parts though.
For those who are thinking why would someone nick a bike to put parts on, etc. One think my job has taught me is if criminals were smart they wouldn’t get caught. Not to mention I’ve come across things a lot more bizarre than that.
It is amazing how many car owners don’t declare mods when insuring but expect the insurer to pay for the alloy wheels, the mega bass stereo and the trackday body kit when the car is stolen. Not surprisingly the insurer then declares the policy invalid for undeclared mods making the vehicle high risk for theft. There are threads on here where this has happened to bikers. Not everyone is bright enough to keep their story straight with the insurer.
I will be full of win if my car gets nicked. As standard it should have alloys and a six disc cd thingy. But an alloy is missing in action and the cd… it’s been poached by my mother for her datsun Z.
