Insurance for non UK licencees

I was expecting to pay around 100 to 200 pounds for insurance but upon quoting it the numbers are more like in the high 300s range. I am looking at 3rd party, fire and theft.

The bike is a 1997 Transalp 600. I have a singaporean and a brazilian full drivers licenses.

Any ideas on what to do to get cheaper insurance ?
Is this normal once you start driving bikes here in London ? I am thinking the insurance may be more expensive becaue I was never insured in the country.

It is more expensive for a non eu licence because you have no record of driving in the uk, and no no claims bonus. You also have only 12 months from arriving to get yourself a uk licence.
