Important diary date for riders in London - 26th Sept '06

TFL are (at long last) due to announce the results of the bikes in bus lanes trials on 26th Sept.

Having just coughed up another £50 I hope the result is get in the Bus Lanes but … as cynical as I try not to be, I have a horrible feeling that they councils and TFL won’t want to miss out on any extra fines that could be imposed on us.

The decision as with most things these days is made by people with big £ signs in thier eyes. !

Since they started adding access to Bus lanes (Trafalgar Square, Piccadili etc) I have noticed that the big problem with them is that they are full of busses and taxi’s.

actually for the cynics out there I know the people who are looking at this and they don’t have any particular agenda re fine revenue.

The decision largely boils down to road safety issues (that’s m/c riders but also peds & cyclists), movement of buses (which is what the bus lanes were put there for in the first place!) and a few other things like whether the presence of m/cs in bus lanes sends people scurrying from pedal power back to cars. Unfortunately bicycles = the gold star form of transport as they’re environmentally friendly, don’t need parking spaces, and are a weapon in the war against ‘The Obesity Crisis Facing Britain Today’. Plus TfL don’t want to spend money on ads to get people onto bicycles then have hoards of scooter kids & big hairy m/cists putting them off…

BTW last time I spoke to those involved, things were looking fairly good re the data they’d been collecting, so fingers crossed!!

bla, bla, bla. shsssshshsshshshshshh

What, only joaking, hope it gets allowed, we all wait in anticipation.

Yes here’s crossing fingers.

I really want it to go through! the use of the Bus lanes will be a great addtition to my commute route. We just have to take extra care of unaware drivers turning left…

TSM - I would have thought that you’d have a particular interest in road safety issues…

I do, but that paricular one will prolly not assist me. Seriously i can see that, even though its all good for the flow of traffic, it will increase the amount of turn left accidents as more bikers start using bus lanes instead of filtering on the right or between other cars. On the otherhand if you do get taken off then you will now have more in your defence other than accepting a 50/50, as it will no longer be filtering which is a greyish area.

I hope it is a positive result then we can get on with watching the road instead of worrying if we going to be fine for trying to stay safe-er.

And it’ll save you a fortune in fines LoL LoL
