I know that the weather is cold and icy but I’ve never really experienced the motorway quite so slippy as this morning.
Coming in on the M4 I throttled up to move from middle lane to outside lane and the back end started snaking around. Cr*pped my pants and eventually settled down at bit only to do it again 5 mins later !!
I suppose I was doing about 70mph each time. Really took me by surpise how bloddy icy it really is. Certainly un-nerved me and got my heart pounding to say the least.
Obviously we all take extra care on local roads etc but I suppose I was just a bit more complacent on the m/ways as there is a higher volume of traffic and they are salted quite well.
Anyone else experience anything simlilar, especially on the motorway??
Poor chap in his 4x4 found out the hard way on the M3 this morning. He was upside down on the embankment heading south just after the M25. Ambulance and fire engine at the scene. Oh and he was facing the wrong way. Didn’t he do well:P
im not the only one who nearly came off this morning!!!
i changed lanes on the M4 and felt the back wheel just go!!!
absolutely crapped myself…!!!
i got a bit complacent as i thought the M’way would be salted properly!!..oh well… didnt ease of the power and managed to stay on…so i guess … i learned from it!!!
The motorways are done properly, 2 sometimes 3 times a night, depending on severity of weather and motorway use, during period of gritting car tyres wiil pick up the salt off the roads. All I can say is DONT take it for granted that all the lane is going to be clear of ice, especially at this time when going back to work after a holiday is going to increase traffic flow.
Take it easy guys, and stick to tyre tracks if you can.
I tend to stick to the inside lane of motorways when its bad like this, as the volume of trucks tend to heat the road a bit due to ammount of wheels on the area follow thier tracks and you be pretty fine just be carefull if swapping lanes
All the grit/salt whatever cr*p they are using on the roads in London is causing all sorts of grief - like riding through kitty litter, it’s awful. Only good thing is cruising up and down bus lanes Q
I did about 180 miles along motorways yesterday afternoon/evening. Frackin’ freezin out but didn’t seem slippy and I was doing quite some speed :Whistling: Shouldn’t’ve been but I had no trouble. Only issue I had was how quickly my visor was getting dirty from all the salty water. I looked like a ghost when I got off the bike, boots, trousers, gloves and helmet were completely grey from salt sigh
At least my visor didn’t freeze over like it did the other night though
