Bit of a rollercoaster day yesterday … or should I say a twisty bendy road day?
Started off quite well when the OT phoned and said if they could arrange therapy for Ian at home he would probably be discharged by the end of the week. Ended up a bit badly after a call from Ian during which I could barely understand what he was saying. I called the hospital who told me he was a bit dehydrated so managed to grab a lift (car at doctors) and flew up there armed with anything and everything I thought he might drink.
Managed to get a large cappuccino from the downstairs coffee shop into him and left a soft drink all poured out on the side with instructions to drink it before he went to sleep. Trouble is, see, he really only drinks coffee and the coffee is apparently so bloody awful that he’s not even drinking that.
I’ve already mentioned it to Ginger but if anyone else does visit I’d be very grateful if you would stop by the coffee shop on the left just inside the main entrance and pick him up a large cappuccino with an extra shot of coffee. Sugar and stirrers are on the opposite wall to the counter and Ian takes 3 brown sugars. Thank you.
I think it’s becoming perfectly clear that Ian would be far, far better off at home now and I’m hoping the doctors, nurses and OTs are coming to the same conclusion!
Hold on? i dont get it…Ians in the best place for being “looked after”…and yet, hes dehydrated??? Dont they KNOW this?

Ok he dont like their coffee, and i dont blame him one bit…and yeh if hes still there friday, i will take him the coffee, no problem…but if he cant talk properly on the phone to you cos hes dehydrated…whats the nurses doing???
What a joke being ill is nowdays eh? we might as well ALL take a crash course on how to look for our own signs and act on them BEFORE we pass out and then the so called professionals take over…ludicrous
This is so true, maybe Ian dont like water etc…many dont i suppose…
what got me is, Sue called the hosp AFTER her conversation with Ian, and they told her he “was a bit dehydrated” !!! err…yeh obviously…cos u lot havent checked him to make sure hes not, till he prob started to talk funny or act funny whatever…:w00t:
Can’t say I’m overly impressed with the way they are taking care of him. It’s just an added worry being as I can’t be there every minute.
I know coffee really isn’t really good for dehydration but it is better than nothing. I’ve taken him in a ton of Ribena, orange squash and little cartons of tropical fruit juice but he he seems to have little sense of time at the moment and I don’t think he realises how little he is drinking over a long period. He needs some encouragement to look after himself and that is why I’m going to phone the OT today to ask if there’s any news from Whipps regarding the therapists he needs so that he can come home.
Getting beyond a tad fed up with being told a different story more than once a day!
is he not on a saline drip? Dont give em coffee that maybe all he drinks but is likely to make things worst. You need an isotonic to restore his electrolystes/salts. You can buy dedhyration satchets that u mix with water for excatly that from Holland & Barrat/most good drugs stores.
