I’m not 100% sure who exactly is enforcing the limpic lanes. TfL does already have a team that monitor CCTV footage for the ususal traffic infringements. I’d guess the same team is using the same kit to monitor the limpic lanes too.
The office with loads of screens seen on the news footage is another thing altogether. It’s all about keeping london traffic flowing, not dishing out tickets.
I totally agree with this. I’ve been riding into them for days and no issues. Also, looking at the way the lanes are painted, signed etc, they don’t meet the standards required to prosecute for things like bus lanes. Coupled with the confusing lack of information and stupidity of the placement of the electronic signs, I don’t think they are enforceable, but I also don’t think they intend/intended to enforce them. And who would enforce them anyway? Police? Councils? LOCOG? whoever that would be would have to be setting up a pretty robust legal team right now. If they are camera enforced, they would have to issue NOI (S172) and all that malarky. If they catch you I’m sure they’ll just give you the talking to…
So - as you say, the threat of fines achieves the result they wanted, then the lack of prosecutions avoids the costs/required organisation/PR nightmare of trying to enforce something so poorly prepared…
Can’t see much profit in that given how much the lanes have cost to puit in, signs, taking the lanes out again, enforcement - paying for poster sites all over London to advertise the Olympic Traffic system etc. Apparently one Staffordshire based company claims to have been paid £20m to put in and take out road markings for the Olympic Games.
They put in one sign and asked da Yoof to tag up some roads… real cost £40 for the spray paint and 60 for a big bag o weed to say thanks. leaving around 844,900 to put towards… what? Is that for TfL? Olympic pot? Boris’s granny fund? Where does it go?
