How long does a 12v battery take to charge?

I have a 12v 5Ah battery which is currently reading 7.5v.

I’m using a 6amp charger, but has taken 1 hour to charge and its not full.

How long should it take to fully charge?

Its there a maths formula?

Thanks

most motorcycle batteries should not be charged over 1 amp and most chargers over that capacity will not recognise a motorcycle battery …

if its a new battery and it has been recognised you risk buckling the plates and knackering a new battery that will not be covered by warranty …

The battery is from a 04 CBR, im guessing its 4 years old.

The charger I have is looks old. But works.

I brought a 1.25amp charger from Halfords but when plugged in it shows the battery is fully charged.

If the battery voltage is reading 7.5 volts I would say it is fubarred.

+1

Anything less than 12.5 V after charging for a few hours means it’s stuffed.

I’ve left it to sit over night and now it reads 3.6v

I’ll put it on charge again.

If it is reading 3.6v after charging that is it. That battery is defective and you need to buy a new one. No amount of charging is going to help, after charging over night that should be reading a nice healthy 12v.

That fact that the voltage has gone down is a sure sign that battery is shagged.

what about trying an opitmate?

Thanks,

I guess I need to start saving then.

I’ll buy a new one soon.

Thanks,

Where can I get one from?

As you have a CBR I would say the easiest place and likely the most expensive would be your local Honda dealer. Others might be able to suggest alternatives.

Optimates are in loads of places i got mine from infinity clapham

Time to buy a new battery…?

Forget the Optimate, a waste of money right now.* That battery is stuffed.

Just go to Halfords and buy a new battery but pre order , not all branches have a decent stock of m/c batteries.

Off subject slightly, but what’s this obsession with Optimate/Accumate? My Lidl £10ish job revived a battery that a £30+ Optimate failed to sort out.
