How Long Do Points Stay On Your Licence?

Does anyone know for certain how long SP30 penalty points stay on ones license? I have always thought it was four years and yet when I took my counterpart down to my local rozzershop this morning to collect the three points I picked up on Sunday’s Memorial Rideout I was told I only had six and not the nine that I thought I had. Jolly good thing too else I’d be walking.

The ‘www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing’ website says ‘Endorsements must remain on a licence for four years from the date of offence in all other cases’ but makes no direct reference to speeding points (SP30).
I have an SP30 issued on 04/04 and by my reckoning that should mean they only come off next April yet I was been told this morning that they were not on my licence. Wierd.

They are ‘valid’ for three years and can be removed from the licence after 4.

I thought it was 4 years but would be gladly proved wrong

Count for the purposes of totting up for 3 years, stay printed on the licence for 4 years, except for some drink drive type offences where I think it’s ten years, but I’m sure one of the traffic officers on here will be along shortly to clarify

They are ‘live’ on your licence for three years.

They ‘physically’ remain on your licence for four years.

they cannot be counted against you after 3 years.

certain endorsements such as dangerous driving and drink driving remain for longer but speeding offences are only 3 years.

How about this for a week:

Wednesday: Front tyre blow-out at 60mph on the A30
Sunday: Three points and sixty quid.
Monday: Lock myself out of house (and garage) in full bike gear.
Wednesday: Drop bike on diesel patch on the way to Borough Market.

Just think 3,4,5 mate.

3 Years Validity Time on Licence.

4 Years physically stay on the counter part.

5 Years the insurance companies want to know about them !

Is it counted from date of offence or date of prosecution?..That’s what I need to know Mr. Scratchin please :cool:

I believe it is from date of conviction

No its counted from date of offence

not the day you were convicted for it in court.

yes you are right for a SP30, different offences eg Drink Driving are from conviction

yes but the question in post one concerns speeding offences so stop trying to confuse the people here.

If you read my previous last post you will see that i did in fact agree with you and went on to explain why i had so OBVIOUSLY GOT IT WRONG ABOUT THE SP30 IN THE FIRST POST
