Yeah some toe rags take advantage of it but there is a lot of youngsters who look forward to this and go to a lot of effort.
I think the entire point is that this is a US-import – not a home grown activity. The yanks take this mega-seriously and do a blinding job whereas the majority of British make some half-hearted attempt at a costume and send their kids begging from people they don’t even know, sometimes without any adult supervision. I think Halloween is a great excuse to dress up for any age, but trick or treating is Naff with a capital N!
