Hole in Engine Block

Ok I have a little bit of a concern. It seems that the damage to the engine cover on the right hand side of my bike is a little more serious than I thought. There is a wonderful hole about the size of the end of my thumb in the engine block, right where it screws on (you can see half the thread :frowning: )

I realise I’m grasping at straws here, but is this repairable? Can it be welded out or is it going to mean a replacement engine? That was the only thing I didn’t want to have to replace which means that was quite possibly her last ride :crying:

It doesn’t look too promising, I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone being able to repair a block :ermm:

Getting a second hand engine shouldn’t be too difficult. Use the casing off the new one and just swap all your bits over. Of course it could also be used as a god excuse to strip the engine and mod it before you rebuild it :w00t:

I’ve seen worse repaired when chains have snapped and lunched the crankcases.

Would require stripping the cases and getting an expert coded welder to do it.

Give this fella a call. Dave Mandel 07950 177 644 … he is a magician with sparks:w00t:

He is mobile and will cost but its cheaper than a new lump.

I have seen far worse repaired on car blocks.

Price everything up then ask Sherrie how much her R6 is  Then make a rational decision based on figures & how many spares you would have left

you will need to strip the engine and take the damaged part to an engineering company, they should be able to build up the damaged part and then machine it and drill thread it, the question is, is it just cheaper to pick up a used engine ?
or you could take a chance http://www.aluminiumrepair.co.uk/html/questions___answers.html

I wouldn’t advise taking it to any old engineering company. This is a job for a precision welder not the usual plasterer;)

Ali repair stuff is OK for non essential parts but would be dangerous for use on a crank case IMO.

OH DEAR!

Sorry Andy, that’s just what you didn’t need. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/yorkshire-engines can get used engines, Malcolm has a very good reputation with kit car people and can get most engines. I asked about an R6 engine a few weeks ago but he’d just sold a batch to a company that makes grass track cars. Should be in the region of £500-£600 for a bare engine.

I’ve seen a complete Gixxer 6 engine (k4) on eBay for £250 so yo might be lucky.

No crash-bungs? Oops…

Take a better picture, use MACRO mode on your camera to get it in focus.

Is it the engine cover or engine block that’s damaged? Engine covers are easy, engine blocks aren’t.

That said, I cracked the sump on my gixxer last year (don’t ask how) and that was repaired nicely.

Have you got instructions on how to fit a gixxer engine into an r6?

I’m more cleverer then what you think… just saying that it needn’t cost a fortune.

am I being totally idiotic, is a new case from yamaha not cheaper and easier…since youve got to remove the engine and rebuild the boogger surely getting a new case should not be too painful and likely cheaper than buying a replacement R6 engine…welding may work but its a good few hours work and I doubt its gonna be that cheap…and then there is the look of it afterwards…

I know!!!

Does it involve traffic islands?

you should be able to get it repaired but just in case you cant see above
