I ride a Triumph Daytona and am often found going round in circles ( notably Brands, Silverstone, Snetter and Lydden! )
Does anyone have any info on bike parking bays - I would like to force the local council to put chain locking points or bars to deter theft - anyone know anything about this? I’ve seen them around , like Putney etc.
Hey, welcome to LB! Put some pictures of your ride in ‘Members Gallery’!
Some Bike Parks have bars so you can chain your bike too but there’s not that many TBH, and its a good idea to introduce these apparatus as its better ‘security wise’… and ‘confidence wise’ in yourself knowing that you can leave your bike there knowing its more safe!
Having something to lock your bike to at a parking bay is good for peice of mind, but if anyone wants your bikes it doesn’t matter what secruity you have they’ll get it anyway. It seems no matter what people use to keep there bikes secure nothing works.
Hey J-Man, welcome to LB! I believe the underlying reason these types of rails aren’t fitted is down to cost. Apparently they find it hard to justify the cost of installing them, though I don’t understand why, considering the millions they make from parking fines. IMO, parking fines should be funneled back into improving the streets, i.e. in our case, chainable railings.
There’s a specific type of railing available that has the chain section mounted to the outside of the rail, on the road-side, so that people can’t trip over it, but bikes parked in the bays can still use them. Though obviously this restricts access to the bikes, meaning you can only get at them from the sides or front, which isn’t always ideal when a bay gets full up and you would have to try and pull your bike out from the front, though a positive side of this is that pedestrians can’t bump into your bike when walking along the pavement, which could please a few people who’ve been victim to scratched fairings before.
I believe there’s some documentation available online which shows the proposal Westminster council received for these types of railings, though it was some time ago and I don’t remember any specics, like where to find it.
There’s one in Camden that I use regularly. Not all in Camden are like this, but it’s great! Just take Bayham St out of the centre, and it’s on the road to the left before the pelican Xing.
Thanxs all - The one I favour is the run of iron railing running the length of the bay ( at waist height so people don’t trip ). I know it wont stop a determined theif, but it will slow them down, and put off casual scum / opportunists etc.
This is quite a handy little book to throw in your bike/jacket pocket, in case you can’t plan parking in advance. It’s about the size of a postcard and thin at about 30 pages (can’t be more specific as mine lives in the bike):
It’s quite accurate. I add to mine the ones I find that aren’t in the book (well, it is from 2004), as well as petrol stations (I’ve suggested them including these in a later edition).
