Have I been stupid or what!!

First off, let me say thanks to the guys for the drink friday lunch time (you know who you are) I had a good time. The journey by public transport however was a different matter. I even managed to end up at the wrong station lol… All part of the fun I guess.

Anyway… Cuting a long story short, all the talk of riding got to me a bit, so I took it on myself to get back on my ride using it as part of my rehab. The thought being that if I couldnt get the bike going then I wasnt able to get back to work. Which to me is the immediate aim, riding again in comfort being the ultimate. So saturday lunchtime I got my leathers on (thanks again samm wicked job) and got the bike off the stand, and off to the petrol station I went. The feeling… aahhh!!! the feeling. It was only the petrol station, in terms of distance… Half a mile! But what a half mile. Grinning like a cheshire cat all the way there, saw a couple of other riders filling up so I had a quick chat at the pumps then back home.

I parked up outside the house and went to put my keys in the door, and noticed that my elbow started clicking as I flexed it. Question… Cause for concern? Nah… There was no pain present, so I let myself in the house, leathers off and had a cuppa and waited for any pain. None came, so an hour later, leathers back on I thought Id have another go only this time Id go a little further. With nowhere really to go I thought I pay the new Ms GR a surprise visit. She lives 20 miles down the M40 in Beaconsfield, ideal practice I thought and off I went.

The funny thing is, as I set off everything felt fine. But by the time I got to Beaconsfield my arm felt like it was it was being cut off… From the inside. The pain was unbelievable, and due to that I couldnt operate the clutch. I managed to get to my destination by nursing the bike the last 4 miles in 3rd gear with my clutch hand resting on the tank (thank god my bike is as torquey as it is). Ms GR went ballistic at my stupidity in getting back on the bike. It must be said though she already hates them, this made it worse. Where my other half lives, the only access is by using what can only be described as bridal paths, they are not proper tarmac roads, and I believe it was these bumps that set off the pain as the bone isnt fully healed. There was no way that I was ever going to make the journey back, and we both new it. She wasnt happy at all that I was so stupid. What makes it all the more worse is the fact that my next appointment with the consultant is monday 02/02/09. Safe to say I wont be going back to work just yet.

Anyway. I got a car ride back home, and the bike was brought back today (sunday) and Ms GR says if I do anything as stupid as that ever again I will have to sell the bike or she will be on her toes. Now there is an ultimatum, and for those of you that have met her know it would indeed by a tough one to call. So all in all the initial joy I felt has been somewhat tempered by a great deal of pain. My arm is now back to being useless. God kows what the x ray tomorrow is going to show.

So its back to sqare one. Lesson learned I think

A true biker!!! You should tell the Mrs the bike comes with you and she can like it or lump it. I will never let a man tell me I have to sell my bike - I’d sell his ass first.

thanks for the support, and thats what happened to the last mrs gr lol…

You need a Mrs who’s into biking - problem solved  (Easier said than done I know, lol  )

iv been looking ever since i bought my first bike :P:P

Have you two been introduced???:stuck_out_tongue:

I read it that the Mrs was looking out for his well being :ermm: Concerned that he was doing damage riding too soon.

Not the best way to convince her bikes are good

Hope you mend quick and don’t rush things this time

That’s a pity mate.

Get well soon, again!

hey grimm, was good to see ya friday lunchtime, this time i even got to talk to ya lol:D hey listen, try not to push things so quik, thats no gud at all. I know how it felt after i had my accident, even tho i only had a broken finger. Rushed back to work 10 days after the accident and now im regretting coz that finger has not been any better since…:crying:

No pain no gain fella:D

Hope no damage done - it’s frustrating being injured like this (arm, leg etc) it’s only natural to see what you can get away with. Hopefully in another month the arm will be strong enough to ride without serious pain. At least the accident occurred over the winter - with luck you should be ready for spring/summer.

Mate. Take it slow as rushing now will seriously damage things for you.

Haven’t you already made your arm recovery worse previously (at the time of the Xmas party) by taking the sling off or something too soon? Didn’t that teach you the importance of giving things time to heal?

I know it’s hard I was on crutches for 11 months following a bike accident and then a further year before I was able to ride again so I know how it feels and it was tough but when I was back on my bike it felt great so it was worth the wait.

And anyway giving it a bit more time to ride again means by the time you get on again it might be sunny and a dam sight warmer!!!

As mentioned above, take it easy and don’t rush into things with the bike. If you push yourself to hard when you’re not ready you’ll end up taking back steps with your recovery and can cause a lot more damage over time.
I think the Mrs was only frightened and concerned for you, although to be threatened with selling ya pride and joy would make me wanna sell the Mrs if I was a bloke and had a wife!

When I had my accident in July 2006, I split my left knee open right to the bone…I even got to see my knee cap! Anyway, I jumped on the bike 6 weeks, 6 days after the accident and went for an hour long run. It was aching badly but I thought, “Balls to it, I’m still going to Poole tomorrow on the Bike Run!”. So, the next day, I saddled up and rode all the way to Poole. My knee was in bits. The next day we did the short run and I was in tears. By the long run on Sunday I was in agony within minutes of getting on her…the journey home on the Monday was a killer! I had (still have her) a Yamaha Diversion XJ600s and its pretty comfy…imagine trying to do all that on the Ninja! :w00t:

So, take it easy and build up the arm gently, it’ll take time but you’ll get there.

Speedy recovery m8!

Grimm, I’d have done exactly the same. Anytime I’ve been injured (thankfully not because of the bike . . . yet) and unable to ride I’ve managed to convince myself that I can and then gone and done it, sometimes successfully, other times not quite so successful!

Good test for Ms GR . . . she obviously cares!

macp you are quite right and I must say in admitting that I do feel like a bit of a plum. I took the sling off to drive to the lb party, the pictures show how immobile my left arm was on the night, moving on to the bile I believed that if I could handle the bike then I would be ok to go to back to work, not realising that the road vibrations would play a part on a tender fracture.

I managed to make it to the hospital today, I set off at 6.30, and travelled behind not only a snow plough but a gritter as well. You should have seen the chaos on the M40 today. At no stage did I get out of 2nd gear the whole way.

Anyway, consultant put up the x-rays for all four visits and looked at todays and swore. I told him what had happened, and the reason why it happened. So as a punishment he put me in plaster. (what can I say Iv been rather silly)

So now no bike, no car, and definately no work. Looks like Im gonna lose the job now too. Expensive lesson eh? Haven’t told Ms GR yet.

hey grim,

if your mrs is as firey as mrs smiled, your dreadding telling her anything that will upset her…:D.i feel for you mate.

mrs smiled hates bikes, hates my bikes in my back garden, hates the money i spend on my bikes.but exepts them because

its my passion…

i had the same argument with her when i was riding around with a cast on my leg for 4 weeks…lol…(2 weeks laid up,so 6 weeks in all).

she called me all the names under the sun for being so stupid, and threw all the ‘‘what if’s’’ my way…but its only because she cares…

do ur self a favour…ps2/3/ pc…call of duty 5…time will flyby;).

smiled:).

Ive got the psp, laptop, and guitar all lined up to keep me busy for the next month, thats how long the lasters gonna be on for, after that its the job centre. wish me luck cause i got to tell her tonight, she wont be impressed at all.i know she cares thats what makes the whole thing that much harder, from day one shes had me going on about being stuck indoors only for me to inadvertantly increase my incarceration period and chuck away a really good earner in the bargain.

lol to the both of you… my just moans all the time, regardless of whether I’m on a bike or not!

answers simple mate… DIVORCE COURT!!! :P:P:P
