Some interesting reading, nice to see other people finally recognising the arguments that Paul Smith has been putting forward for a few years. Published in the Telegraph but don’t let that put you off, it’s from a book not the papers own scribblings.
it just shows that the government is about anti freedom, the chap Menbiot makes it clear that government policy is about controlling the population and making them do as they are told…some people are just lemmings and it is amazing how some very clever people follow the uncorroborated rantings of others…
We dont need slower roads we need faster safer roads…
This has always been my argument as far as safer roads has been concerned. We need a compulsory method of making drivers safer and more aware of their surroundings and the conditions of the environment they drive in.
It’s a matter of whether we would be able to police dangerous driving and inappropriate driving (which would be hard enough to define, I’m sure).
Ah not true, elad, straight roads send people to sleep, make them lose concentration and bore people to death…literally…which is a bigger cause cause of accidents than travelling above the posted speed limit, so:-we need challenging roads with good open sweeping bends, without trees lining them, with good view lines, with good width and lighting, with sensible barriers to save us not kill us…and with sensible speed limits…ie unlimited in some areas…BUT:-the down side in my mind is we will all have to be tested more often and we may have to have older cars and bikes speed rated so precluding say a 20 year old car from running at 150 mph no matter how well maintained… its easy to do and should form the basis of a sensible road policy, speed is not the killer, this document seems to say that the government is the killer because of its lack of attention to the real facts…labour sucks, so too does brunstrom who has more power than you can imagine.
Thats a really interesting read! I have to say when I went on the Speed Awareness course they do teach that speed is only a factor in 3.5% (or whatever it is) of accidents and all the other factors need to be considered. It’s easy to slip in to false sense of security that because your traveling under the speed limit you won’t have an accident.
And I am very confused with the way people just step out in front of moving traffic these day and expect everything to stop. Someone has made a comment about that report saying we no longer have the Green Cross Code. Is that right?? I was brought up with the ‘Stop, Look, Listen’ slogan drummed into my head at primary school. And we were shown numerous videos about road safety and kids getting hit by cars. Does that not happen in schools anymore? Anyone with kids out there know?
A very interesting read and not with any surprises really, just glad that a wider audience gets to know just how this goverment and all its quango’s manipulate statistics for their own ends. I agree too that the children of today are not taught or have drummed into them any road safety policy.
I do think speed cameras in and around schools, colleges and other areas where a large movement of people is likely but to have them here, there and everywhere is defeating the object and clearly are just revenue generators. I remember when going on holiday as a child that I used to see motorway patrol cars all the time on their little podiums on the edge of major road - now covered by traffic personnel.
I dread to think how the UK will be in 10yrs time with all manner of detection systems for motorists and the general public being detected for too many black bags and not enough recycling per household etc. etc. Will we be charged for walking down the street! Who knows…I want to emmigrate to Europe…any recommendations
