For those of you that haven’t heard of it yet: Latitude basically shows where your friends are on google maps from the signal triangulation on their phone or GPS enabled phone if they have it. Some rather major privacy concerns with it really but still it was interesting enough that I had a quick look around it.
It basically uses Google Maps on your mobile, you can select to use Latitude and it uploads your location so the friends you’ve previously selected to share your location with can see roughly where you are.
Anyway, like I said I’m signed up to it but doubt I’ll be leaving it to upload my location all the time… in fact I probably won’t open it up again for quite a while so apparently my location is somewhere along the railway line near Wimbledon at the moment. I don’t know anyone else who is using it or will be planning on using it… but what about you guys? And what do you all think of it?

From what I’ve read you can actually reposition your whereabouts – so you can be down the pub after work and you can position your phone back at the office! Now that is genius! 
Is it always on or can you just enable it when you like ie: say if you went out for a ride so people would know where you are if say you stacked it into a bush and nobody could see you from the road?
This sort of thing has been available for a long time for climbers and hikers etc, just now its coming to mobile phones with a GPS capability.
From what is reported in the papers you can switch it on or off, or like Zeus said, make it lie. Apparently people in your address book have to give permission for thier numbers to be tracked by your phone.
It would possibly be a good idea for older children/teenagers on nights out etc if it had parental over-ride for the settings, but sounds like it might be open to abuse in the wrong hands.
Yeah you can switch it on or off. When you close google maps on your phone it asks if you want to leave Latitude running in the background. Would be good when you’re out on your bike really.
I was already thinking about writing a program for my phone if possible which would use the on-board GPS receiver and upload my location to my webserver, which could then show the route I’m taking whilst out on the bike. Thought it may be kinda cool, especially when you find a new route but later on can’t work out where you were 
it could be handy as a tracking device for a mobile stashed somewhere on your bike/car.
Or your partners.
