Getting a free Yamaha Vity - best thing to do?

Hello chaps,

I’m getting a free Yamaha Vity scooter on Saturday. Its been garaged for the last four years and eye balling it the brake discs are corroded beyond recognition. Other than it seems fine. I imagine all of the fluids need a change out.

My question is do you think it is better to do the bike up and get it running before trying to sell it on or sell it as seen? My mechanical knowledge is pretty basic. My local Yam dealer reckon 400-500 to get it running with all fluids changed and discs / pads changed. Probably a new battery.

What do ya think? Anybody here interested in buying as it is?

Its been gifted for a reason. Give it to someone who wants it for what it is and has the time and inclination to sort it out themselves.

If I had the space I’ll try to keep it and fix it, I like scooters as a useful tool to get to the market and do some errands…

How much you want for it?

if it was me I would get it up and running just for the fun of it

I would measure the discs to see if they would take a skim before laying out on replacement’s

the dealer quotes dealer rates not DIY rates

Personally, I’d never ‘skim’ motorcycle disc … is your safety really worth saving a few £££?

this is true for a motorcycle

but it wouldn’t bother me doing it on a scooter if it was in tolerance

I’m with Wise on this one. it’s probably surface rust you can scrub off

& im with you on this one Groovy

im surprised they rusted scooter discs tend to have a high chromium content as opposed to motorcycles which can vary greatly in there makeup

heck, for under £20 you can get a replacement disk with a free wheel! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-VITY-FRONT-WHEEL-DISC-AND-SPEEDO-DRIVE-/252304984605?hash=item3abe8c8a1d:g:AHQAAOSwKtlWlkz-

or £35 for a disk, wheel and tyre http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-VITY-125-FRONT-WHEEL-EXCELLENT-TYRE-BREAKING-WHOLE-SCOOTER-/111907974771?hash=item1a0e3c2e73:g:Yi8AAOSwsB9V~VKK

By all means do it up but don’t expect to make any profit. Beware of free vehicles too. Some chaps on YouTube were all excited when they got a free BMW750. They scrapped it a few weeks later as it was uneconomical to repair.

Oh and if you watch Wheeler Dealers if they factored in labour and garage space they’d be in the red on every single build.

Thanks for the input chaps. It’s a genuine freebie - son went off to uni four years ago and never returned and they just want it out of the garage. It’s a family friend.

I’m going to van it to Yamaha to make it road worthy and then either keep for a supermarket runner as someone suggested or sell it come spring.

I think it will value at about £1k when roadworthy if anyone is interested.

What Yamaha will charge you will be what you make in profit probably!

Bring it over, I reckon I can sort you out for a great deal less than that

Hey Scorch - where are you at?
