Anyone noticed the blocks of camera’s high up on poles cropping up recently. I have seen tham on the A312 north from the M4, on the A40 and the 406, They are a group of about 5 cameras with some sort of infa red camera or something?
Anyone know what they are? Don’t think speed camera’s as I would be disqual by now, maybe ANPR?
In another thread I mentioned two blocks of these on either side of the fire station at the bottom of West Hill (A3) Wandsworth. The ones that look forward facing on traffic entering London seem to have some sort of IR illuminator, whilst the ones that are forward facing for traffic leaving London don’t. The view is they are part of some ANPR system, but it is not clear why APNR would be operating there.
I’ve been past some new ones recently but I can’t for the life of me remember where it was, maybe on the A414 or A12. Definitely not speed cameras because they’re illegal if they’re not yellow. One central pole with a cross-bar at the top, three little grey tubular cameras pointing one way and three the other. Assumed it was ANPR, isn’t that eventually intended to be nationwide surveillance? Don’t be surprised to see them springing up everywhere.
Yes I’ve seen these too - on the North Circ up towards brent cross and on the A41 coming out of Hendon towards the Nort Circ… been wondering myself - must assume they’re ANPR I guess… I wonder who we could call and ask?
There are some on the A13 too, blocks of 5 cameras, each seems to have an extra bit underneath it as well, almost a facing down camera or somethign, not sure what that bits for though…
They are the new ‘Tag and Beacon’ cameras as first reported in MCN on the 15th march 2006. Appologies for the anorack reply but I worked on the story.
Here is the link (thats me in the photo!):
