Free video editing software advice sought

Hi guys,

I’d like to try my hand at editing the files from an SJ4000 dvr that a friend has lent me. What freeware have you used that you would advise? I would be using it on Windows 7 puter (64 bit), with 32Gb of memory, so would think that strong enough platform.

the things I’d like to be able to do are:

  1. Crop clips - that is if I have a 5 minute clip, to be able to trim out unwanted footage.

  2. Add clips together.

  3. Slow down some parts of the footage.

  4. Speed up some parts of the footage.

  5. Add text in.

  6. Add highlights in, like a circle or arrow to highlight something.

  7. Add music.

  8. Add my own audible comments.

Basically, the kind of stuff that most of enjoy watching on good youtube videos.

What else should I be considering?

I believe Lightworks is considered the best free video editor, I struggle to get on with it myself, so use Corel VideoStudio Pro X7, but I seem to have a bug, dropping in audio files often makes it crash :frowning:

Try to download the software from GoPro or a similar action camera on their websites, it’s normally free. You might need to create a bogus account.

Aceman Vlogs coming soon?

for simple video editing I use VirtualDub. It’s completely free.

I have the GoPro software and it is really easy to use, obviously i have it from my GoPro but i have put videos taken from my phone into GoPro footage as well and it works, so there is no reason why other cameras wouldn’t work. the files are taken from your computer not the GoPro so if you save them as Mp4 then they will transfer onto the GoPro software as that is what a GoPro saves as.

Andy - Please delete your posting, or at least delete the hyperlink. I downloaded it and got a virus. Just got my puter up after a 3 hour rebuild. I still have a couple of hours work to do to get it back to its original working condition. I guess that will teach me to keep an update virus checker running :crying:

That’s surprising. Are you sure it was this download? TechRadar are a well established, long standing site. Probably worth reporting your findings to them.

Definitely. After my techno geek brother rebuilt my puter, which took over 5 hours, he put on a great anti virus program and tried to download it again. This time, the av detected it dealt with it. But it also downloads a game too, which I tam highly suspicious of, so I’ve uninstalled it all, and notified the company.

Even that said, is there much reason to not just download from the publisher and get it as they intended?

I’ve never understood people who download winzip from cnet.com.
