I don’t expect to many to be interested in the slightly - but I found it really interesting - and thought some of you might too. Had always thought of him as just the “When I’m Cleaning Windows” man - turns out I was wrong
I did yes - and after hearing Frank Skinner talking about him on QI, I felt somewhat obliged to watch it last night considering he’s from “mi neck ut t’woods”.
I walked past his blue plaque every day as a nipper. On StreetView - you can’t really make it out : LINK : but a bit of Googling reveals that it has moved anyway, and the StreetView car hasn’t gone down the road of the new location since it’s been put up.
And funnily, for a programme detailing his life, Wigan was only half mentioned in talking about his childhood home. There is a statue of him in the shopping centre in town that people quite often bump into if they’re not paying attention, then apologise to it :hehe: : http://www.grand-arcade.co.uk/george-formby.asp
Thanks for posting that Mr-C, would never have seen it otherwise.
What a good life story - it has everything, comedy, tragedy, politics, the lads in Afghanistan, Hitler, (and how they get the letters in a stick of rock, something I have always wondered about). Very sad but very intersting.
