A nice flat stretch out Autobahn A5 somewhere between Freiburg and Offenburg…
Snow covered Black Forest mountains on the horizon.
A gap in traffic… kerchunk, kerchunk:
4th… to 220 @ 11,000 rpm
5th… to 260 @ 11,000 rpm
6th…
Head ducked in…
And flat against the throttle stop…
And with my balls on fire and a silent scream in my throat…
…I glimpse down for a 1/20th of a second, which is about all I have time for, just in time to see the needle pass the “280” on my speedometre…
…and then I had to slow down for the next bunch of f@#@*!ing cars.
But that, my friends, was a moment of divinity.
When Burt Munro said “You live more on a bike like this in 5 minutes than some people live in their lifetime”, this was the kind of sh!t he was talking about.
My old ZZR1100 D2 with 40,000 miles on it still pulls an indicated 180+ on a couple of roads through Serbia…not many cars and those there are tend to stay in the inside lane doing 35 mph (motorway)
i’m getting old now and I start thinking “What if…chain…tyre…etc” …after a couple of mins but still do it when the chance comes along:)
No, she wasn’t flat out yet… I ran out of room rather than out of steam, unfortunately >.<
With the Honda Lie-O-Meter who knows if it was even close to a “real” 285 but in any case, to use the words of my former Driving Instructor I was “making good progress”
In Switzerland I had a bad date, but I had a such a good time riding there and back that the bottom line has to be that I still had a great day. It’s amazing how biking can turn any day, no matter how crummy, into a good day. You got to love it for that.
You could come home after losing your job, giggling like a child, with the missus asking what the matter is and you would answer. “Oh I got sacked. But I had a great ride home. Tee hee hee.” Gotta love it for that! <3
“Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba…”
Oh I wanted to add… which was extra cool yesterday too… I overtook a police car at 240 km/h (140 mph) !!
Was following him for ages, keeping an extra long 3 second distance of course… eventually when it opened up he opened up and at 240 he ran out of steam and moved over!!
Germany sucks in many ways but in this regard it’s awesome.
Not sure but yesterday coming home I was giving it a bit, think was around 122mph saw a police car on left, just pulled over a Fiat Punto:) I glanced at him, saw his head turn… but that was it… I think he waved… or was that telling me to slow down? or that I should slow down and let him catch up and pull me over?? Not sure…
I did slow down afterwards:) just in case. So he probably didn’t realised the speed since the cars ahead were doing about 95mph.
The interesting thing in Germany is, any accident on the derestricted streatches of Autobahns and the German rozzers through the book at you. In some areas, the ‘speed limit’ is advisory. I got wee’d off, as we had a derestricted Autobahn near by but a bridge with a 70km speed limit on it (with camera’s). So you’d open it up abit, slow over the bridge then just open the throttle. Saw so many people getting ‘flashed’ by the cameras when I lived there.
I saw an indicated 152mph on my R6 once, I still had a bit to go but the wife on the back was starting to squeeze the life out of me so slowed way down. That was the only time I ever went fast with her on the back. She still has a go at me about it.
