Filtering to the Front of the Traffic

No-ones ever pulled me either… but thats what they said  you watch, i’ll get done too now

Most bikers have been known to stop in the cycle boxes in Lambeth on occassion (I’m thinking Kennington Rd/Brixton Rd etc) and cabbie is the first I’ve heard that has been done for this. Cabbie can you just confirm that this is not just another wind up…ta.

Wouldn’t be suprised if it’s true as I’ve just paid a PCN to Lambeth for being in a bus lane at 5 mins to 7pm (my clock was fast). Thought about challenging it but realised that if they could be bothered to issue the ticket they probably wouldn’t accept an appeal.

+1 very well put mate!

Soon as the cycle boxes were introduced 100’s of cab’s where given PCN’s, I gave up cabbing due to the amount of PCN’s dropping though the letter box each month, Camden is the worst for dirty tricks, they put a no U turn sign up in Southampton way BEHIND the triffic light so it was not visible, they then waited to the last day and issues 100’s of PCN’s at once.

It’s a sad fact that motorist’s and motorcyclist’s are just being used as revenue providers and some of the PCN reasons are getting pathetic!

I always go in front of the lead vehicle, unless it has two wheels, in which case I give it the respect it deserves.

I was told on one occasion by a bike Policemen that the cycle box was a grey area. We were both in it at the same time. Another told me that he ‘could’ have fined me for using the ASL on three occasions, but didn’t.

Re moving over, I can’t believe the lack of awareness some guys have. You pull forward, they pull forward but are still blocking the guys behind, even tho there’s plenty of room. What can you do…

Saw a community police officer on a pushbike set off on red before the lights had changed this morning…contemplated making a citizens arrest…

I can beat that, saw a police BMW parked on double yellow lines on the corner of Lambeth road and Hercules road, I had a job getting the transit passed it with the cars opposite, must be on an important call me thinks, I parked up and walked back to the corner cafe and guess what, two cops waiting for bacon rolls and coffee, nice.

OK, I’ll say it . . first rule of filtering (and many other situations) , “don’t take off till you can see where you will land”

If you are filtering to the front and there is nowhere to go when you get there (because someone is there already) IT’S YOUR FAULT!

Filtering is great, but use your eyes and make a plan, filtering past ten cars to sit behind one or two is better than filtering past twelve and getting marooned.

London Cabbie … that explains so much.

Ex London cabbie for 8 years now, but the PCN’s still give me nightmares :w00t:

Well said that man

i got a bollocking last week off a copper… they were waiting at the traffic lights in Farringdon Rd/Fleet St… i assume trying to catch cyclists jumping Red Lights… as they were paired up at every set of lights at that junction !! :unsure:the lights were green & the cycle lane had broken lines so i nipped up it & as i got to the front the lights changed red… so rather than block the cycle lane i pulled forward into the cycle box… a copper came over & said thats a £30 fine being in a cycle box… so dont do it again !!

on another note… say along the embankment… some cycle lanes have a solid white line… so i dont go in them when filtering in very slow traffic if empty… but what about the ones with broken white lines… i assume you can nip in them if theyre empty !? :ermm:

Always worth a challenge to a Lambeth PCN if you feel you’ve been hard done by. Especially the video stuff. They are known to have problems with their video equipment not bening correctly timestamped - which is a technical error and makes any PCN invalid. Also check time plates carefully as poorly displayed / damaged signs also get you off.

A 1st challenge - where they supply evidence - doesn’t affect your 14 day half price period either.

But if you think it was a fair cop pay up…

good point michael.

Too late! I choked on this occassion and coughed up (if you know what I mean). I’m sure I’ll have other opportunity though so thanks for the advice. Interested to know though how you could possibly challenge the time stamp on video evidence- I have nothing to counter it with?

If a cycle lane has a solid line it is mandatory and you can get a fine for being in it. If it is a broken line you can use it as long as you don’t have a accident when your crossing of the line will be used against you. If there is no line like the new Boris supercyclewaythingies you can ignore them.

The law on cycle boxes is simple. Cross a solid line with a motor vehicle when the light is red without needing to.proceed to avoid danger and it is failing to stop at red. Doesn’t matter whether it is the first line or the second.

The law has do many loopholes based on safety etc that it is impossible to get a ticket by cctv. No cctv system is authorised for cycle box ticketing as it would need to be linked to the red light timing and also show the approach and any hazards the rider was responding to such as vehicles behind threatening to rear end etc. Cctv would also need to be able to detect diesel, ice gravel etc as they could all be defences for proceeding to a better spot.

A copper on the scene is s different matter as he can provide firsthand evidence of all of this.

Not sure what happened but a fee years ago DfT was researching what happens if bikes are allowed in bike boxes. Aussie research suggests it makes both motorcycles and cycles safer by helping to keep four wheeled vehicles apart from the bicycles.

The incidents I heard about were quite blatant - the date setting was wrong or the time was a couple of hours out that sort of thing

yeah i find it annoying but i don’t care they were there first therefore they have a choice whehter to be polite or stubborn or follow the rules.

and for gods sake if putting your bike into cycle box is illegal why don’t they fine us? i see loads of bikers do that…well scooters tend to be the main offenders.

in my opinioin i think its far safer for bikers to be in cycle box as long as they wait patiently to cyclist to move off. and also in my opinion i think it’s safer for cyclists to jump red lights.

but then again i would say all this cause i’m a little hooligan

Ok if I am in a red cycle box I’ll know I’m near Mel and Lewis’s place and to nip in for a cuppa :D:D
