so im listening to other peoples bikes and hearing some lovely sounds, then i start up my pretty (but dirty) 636 and the noise doesn’t make me want to smile…
now dont get me wrong, i love the bike, but…
i want a nice, deep sound resonating from my beast and i just dont have it.
i think my 250 made the same kind of noise.
so my question is this,
what kind of exhausts are best?brand?full system or slip on?location to pick up for cheap?before anyone says anything though, i was thinking about getting a yoshimura slip on, ive heard good things about them.
i see a lot of akropovic’s and they sound nice…im so conflicted!
I think if you’re looking for just a slipon then in terms of ‘what’s best’ you’re really just shopping for a sound. The major brands are all well made so just listen till you find something nice. The akro’s and yoshi pipes sound more refined to me. Some of the other brands have more of a bark.
If you’re after a performance improvement (and the associated ‘noise’) then you need to get rid of that cat and get a full system.
You get what you pay for, also different bike manufacturers get better sound from the same pipes, for me Yoshi and akrapovic are the best by far not just sound but build and performance wise too. Personally if you were looking at spending £200-£300 On a brand new slip on I would consider getting a 2nd hand full system off eBay as not only will it sound better (deeper) but you’ll get performance improvements too.
Go full system and you won’t regret it! Just don’t go micron/scorpion they are cheap and just annoyingly loud with no real tone - if you go for just a slip on which isn’t akro/yoshi/termi then blueflame has a really nice sound!
Full system is the thick end of a grand and you’ll probably gain about 5bhp if that, which on your bike is about 5%. Loud pipes are fun but they can annoy you on a long journey.
I got a Full Yoshimura System off ebay for £280. and it was the much saught after Jap version rather than the cheaper USA version. it had a few marks on it but i cut it down to a Stubby and it’s perfect now. As above, a new full system is mega bucks for the performance gain, but if you don’t mind a few age related marks a 2nd hand system is well worth going for.
I’m thinking of getting different exhaust on my bike (it’s got the stock on).
But don’t know what to get. Like you, i’ve looked at Akrapovic. But they don’t come cheap. Not really looking to increase power, bike got more power then i am able use :Wow:
Adding an aftermarket end can is much more likely to decrease performance. The engine is designed to work at a specific backpressure, and open pipes rarely have a positive impact, although the increase in noise can make you believe that. Just saying…
I wanted a deeper sound from my MT-09 too when I bought it but the only option was a full akra system that was around £900. Didn’t want to risk paying so much money for something unknown and decided to wait for someone else to fork out.
Eventually it happened and I heard the pipe in real life and was very disappointed. It wasn’t much more different from my stock pipe. Later Akropovic released another, carbon, system but it was a race pipe but it was “Not for road use” so another fail. I then sold the MT and bought a gixxer and found out that if I wanted to get the full Yoshi system (which does look amazing) I’d have to fork out around £1200. They sound good on Youtube but I’ve no idea what they’re like in reality so go figure.
Moral of the story - if you don’t care about the power gain get something that sounds good in real life. No youtube video will do any pipe justice. You could try going to Ace cafe one day and listening to other Ninjas and asking their owners what they have. That’s probably something I’ll do when I decide to get a new pipe, if I do. Luckily my bike sounds pretty good with the stock can due to the loud intake noise.
