I am thinking about taking out the Baffle from my Beowulf exhaust system on the Z750, and have been told it’ll sound lovely (by westie). My only worry being, is this road legal? (if not has anyone been pulled up on it)
If you can still hear yourself think, then it is not too loud. The real issue is keeping rev’s low and not absolutely caning it everywhere at max revs as that will get you pulled. I’ve got the baffle out of my Scorpion and it has a lovely deep grumble that goes into a manic howl at higher revs, sounds glorious on a triple engine! But yes, it will be illegal and you can get pulled for it. I’ve passed quite a few policemen though and have not been pulled - yet…
I’ve taken the baffle out of my Beowulf & it sounds great. Nice pops on the overrun. I haven’t had any trouble with plod so far and passed a few cop cars along the way. However, I just drop the revs or dip the clutch just in case - chicken !!!. I always carry the baffle under my seat just in case I get pulled. You may be able to grovel you rway out of it if they mention it and get away with just putting it back there & then on the roadside. Part of my arugment for taking it out anyway is so that my bike IS loud in order that cagers can hear me when I’m filtering in & out of traffic. The quieter bikes are the more chance we have of not being seen !
If you drill out the rivet, sort out a self tapping screw and get that in place, then remove the screw and baffle. Carry the screw, baffle and a driver with you for quick replacesment.
Why? because without a fastening, the baffle tubes from my Arrows cans launch themselves out, once the cans are hot, like a pair of ols fashioned torpedos.
It aint cool having to stroll back up the road looking for the lost bits and hoping a trucks not flattened them.
LOL
I thought you were going to say it aint cool to have to stroll back up the road looking for the other half of the cyclist’s head it had gone through
well all -I had it removed when i took my bike to the service centre on friday! Sounds lovely and the MOT place they would probably pass it on that too!
I know someone who got pulled but not charged. If you are going to take the baffles out always carry some ear plugs as the additional noise can do your head in on a long run.
When you take the baffle out start it up and hold it at about 7000rpm (or whatever your motorway crusing rpm is) while your stood next to it. Then imagine standing there for any prolonged period of time and you get the idea.
Here in Germany the coppers have been known to pull bikers over and stick the ol’ broomstick in the can to see if the baffle’s in! If it isn’t your talking big bucks… so watch out if you’re coming this way without them.
Worse case scenario is they will tell you you can go no further as your bike in its current state isn’t in compliance with regulations… which means even more $ down the drain for alternate transport and trailering it home… so if you do come, carry the baffles with you so you can put them back in when needed.
No baffle in my Beowulf on the ZX6… never been pulled with it either but there again fluttering eyelashes by Lancome get away with most things in this town… the Bandit’s louder Qx

Now here is an illegal ploy I’ve heard of.
Apparently, some people remove the baffle tube, drill a decent hole in the end plate but then grind away the sides so theer is almost nothing left of the tube.
When the “broomstick test” is carried out, it comes up against the dead stop of the tube end plate and gets the nod despite being b**er all of the baffle in place.
