Ever happened to you?

As most of you know i sold the bug(my hornet 250) and Saturday the guy arrives ready to ride it back to berks…bike started lovely left her sitting there ticking over…turned her off went indoors for a cuppa and sort the paperwork, money etc…Go back out fire her up and it promptly spluttered backfired and died! Oh my god i so wanted the ground to swallow me up… i promptly gave the chap his dosh back and told him i could’nt sell her now…now i’ve got to find out whats happened! anyone had this happen and what was the problem? i’ve checked one of the spark plugs and getting no spark on the one i could get to without taking the tank off…Amazing that the guy is still really interested in buying her so i have to get this sorted and soon to keep this buyer…or i’m gonna have to pass up the sv i was eyeing up…:crying: Help!

that is serious bad luck… ! :ermm:

hope you get it fixed soon

(sorry cant be of more help)

Obviously she does not want to leave you

Ignition coils? Check the connections are good and not corroded.

HT lead broken? swap one over and see if it works…

The day I sold my previous bike I fell off it on Brisxton Hill - smashed mirror, scratched clutch casing and fairing and bent indicator stick - fella still bought it but I knocked off £200 for a quick sale!

Well we’ve had it bits all day today tested everything…:doze: it has a very weak spark on it though, anyone on here a mechanic that would come over and have a look? cos we only know basic stuff and have tried all the obvious stuff:)

Hey,
This is me, the buyer of the hornet. I see you havn’t fixed it yet, anyway, i searched around a bit for possible causes of a weak spark and found this, it’s not a hornet, but a cbr400, close enough.

I’ve also heard found that main causes of weak sparks are usually the coils, sometimes leads and spark plugs, also they say to make sure that the spark plug gap is correct, as a too big gap could cause a weak looking spark.

Hope this helps,

Toshk, (Hopefully new owner of the bug

I know you’ve more than likely checked this, but experience shows it’s often the small/simple things that get overlooked…

Spark plug gap or carbon deposits? If it’s black then that will be weakening the strength of the spark. By the sounds of it though it’s something more than that but thought worth a mention.

Hope you find the problem. Looks a lovely bike - I would’ve loved to snatch it up myself if I had the money :frowning:

Beat me to it - my internet is playing up so took ages for the reply to post up :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey Tosh hi luvvie:D

well we took off the tank, tested all the spark plugs bit oily! gonna try new ones tomorrow, tested coils and all wiring today and that seemed fine, if the spark plugs make no difference then by saturday the engine will be out and i’ll strip down the carbs give the whole bike a good going over:D get the pistons checked as well me thinks;) I will get this bike sorted tosh luvvie by the time i’ve finished with it you’ll have a pukka bike if you can hang on til its sorted:D

Thanks, I can wait, When (if) i pass my theory on friday i’ll book my practical test sometime the week after, so by the time thats done the bike should be ready.

Cool:D she handles terrific and i’m sure you’ll have more time to enjoy it before you get a big bike to play on;)

Also, didn’t you say that some motorbike mechanic was going to have a look at it, steve’s son i think you said.

Yeah he came over but he reckons scooter engines are his speciality not motorbikes but he still helped us check all the electrical stuff cos he’s good with them,But i will try new plugs tomorrow so fingers crossed it solves the problem:D

oh okay, yeah hopefully that will be the problem. Does the bike have just electric ignition or electronic ignition, because my dads bike has electronic and it’s got a CDT (or something along those lines) box in it, which controls the starting of the bike, if the bug has got that then maybe that could be the problem.

EDIT: Don’t worry, i’ve just checked the spec and it says electric.

Toshk nice one, I was very interested in buying Wasps bike but I was looking to spend a bit more money on it and decided would rather get a 600 Hornet instead.

One thing I notice when I was interested in buying was the rear break lights, I saw some of the leds weren’t working. I asked Mike about it and it seems if the leds don’t light up it could be the whole unit so make sure you get that looked at, unless Sam sorted them out.

If you wanna bling it up just a little for an extra £25 I would get these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/__Motorcycle-Parts-Accessories_Honda-CB-125-250-500-600-900-Hornet-INTEGRATED-MIRRORS_W0QQitemZ250257367366QQptdnZMotorcycleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQptdiZ3388QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250257367366&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Hey, thanks but from what we’ve found out it seems like a loose connection to a couple of the led’s as when the bike goes over a bump they light up, so hopefully it should just be a case of tracing the cables.

Thanks for the link.

Ahh that’s good news. I can vauch the bike is quite fast:) I did a test ride and as WASP saw I was grinning when I got off it:)

Make sure you also have proper biking boots or hard toe ones, the gear change was a little hard on my trainers. The bike sounds great and has a nice fat tire:) Just be careful… some people won’t realise you ride a 250cc and might wanna have a go at you:D:P it looks a lot faster.

I loved the bike that much that I decided I will be getting a 600cc one, same as WASPS. I do need that extra ooomph, I commute London into Essex so I need something that will do 70mph constant or a little faster and pull away quick. I would rather not redline the 250cc at every chance I get. Stacy found out that if you do it too much the bike might not like it:D

Hope to see you on it soon. Maybe the next Breakfast Run? The BCR starts at the Collier Row rondabout and into Essex. That 250 Hornet should fly on them twisties:) you’ll get your knee down on it a lot faster and safer than on a bigger bike.

The bike definitly looks bigger than it is, Looking at it from behind you would never think it was a 250, there will definitly be people wanting to race, ive had people wanting to race me on my scooter

It might be a little while before i’ll be getting my knee on the ground, i’ve got to practice quite a bit as i’ll be going onto it from a 125 scooter

So,

How did it go with the spark plugs? please tell me that it’s all working fine now
