Has anyone here ever heard of anyone being pulled for having a tinted visor? I’ve heard that mirrored surfaces and tinted visors on UK roads isn’t legal if they are more than 50% or something?
Has anyone here ever been pulled for their visor? I see it all the time in London, in fact I see it nearly all the time to be honest, 100% tint and so on.
I just recently fitted an iridium tint to my helmet. The sun is blinding me at the moment and often shades don’t really sit right, been meaning to get one for awhile, but it took accidently smashing off my old one to motivate me.
personally I don’t know anyone who has. I wear mine almost all the time but I carry the clear one in my bag too. if I don’t wear it, I can’t see and sunglasses steam up too much
Nope nowhere… A while back there was a guidance issued by the Committee of Police Chiefs or something like that (basically top brass in the UK) recommending that for tinted visors there shouldn’t be a penalty. Of course local authorities could choose whether they adhered to this guidance. Apparently the most stringent force on this is N. Wales… I drove all last summer to the cotswolds and never got stopped for it, despite it being late-ish when the sun was just setting…
I’ll see if I can find that guidance published…
Edit: From another article online - this seems to be in line with what I had read last year
the visor has to have that safety stamp of some kind and virtually all tinted visors do not have them.
Look at your clear visor and you will see in the top left or right some kind of mark with some regulation stuff on, plus something about it being shatter proof???
it has the same legality as an exhaust with the baffles taken out - if you’re riding ‘aggressively’ and they’re looking for an excuse to stop you, exhaust and visors are the easiest ways to go.
It kind of makes me laugh that we get penalised for very dark visors when you see these berks in range rovers driving around with dark sunglasses on behind tinted windows - I mean what kind of visibility are they experiencing?
cars aren’t allowed to have their front windows tinted and, I imagine, the police would take a dim view (:D) if they saw you driving at night with sunglasses on.
i think the general consensus is a bit like baffles in exhaust pipes - the pealers wont necessarily pull you in for a tinted visor or lack of exhaust baffle, but if they pull you in for speeding for example, and you get one having a bad day he may throw the book at you for the lot
never, but got followed by the police down the A406 at night after BM as I forgot to bring my clear visor. Pulled it back up to get them to back off and they did, had to pull it back down shortly afterwards as riding at 50+ without a visor is not nice and surely more dangerous than having it down?
I was pulled in a mass motorbike check on the A4 near mayfair. He gave me a rolloking for filtering as a learner (?) which I took like a champ following the words 'Listen up or i’ll do you for your small plate) :w00t:
No mention of the dark (‘illegal’) visor though on this sunny day. Just a pat on the back and have a nice day.
Cars tend to get out of the way more when they cant see your face behind a dark visor and pedestrians see less likely to step out whilst looking at you. Dont know why but it suits me.
I’ve had better reactions with pedestrians when I’m wearing a black visor… They tend to look more and are much more receptive to waving - overall they seem more positive. Also a couple of times I have seen little kids smile and jump up and down frantically waving at me… surely there’s no better a feeling than when you’ve made some little kid’s day when he’s on his toy trike?
