When I was at the Borough Market on Wednesday night, I spoke with a couple of the guys who are planning their summer holidays on their bikes abroad this year.
The question was “Eurotunnel or Ferry?”.
I’ve taken the Eurotunnel on my bike about 100x (I was living in Paris for 4 years up until October and commuting backwards and forwards to London for work).
If you can book the Eurotunnel 21days in advance the price is unbelievable. 15euros each way is the usual tarrif. (10pounds).
25minutes to transit the tunnel and POP! Out you come in Calais. 2hours later - centre of Paris.
I hear all the time “you can’t get 15euros one way on a Sunday!”. Yes you can, as long as it’s off-peak and you’ve booked it 21 days in advance.
Off peak can mean pre-9am or post-6pm. But honestly, if you’re travelling down the M20 or trying to cross the Channel Tunnel to get to Europe on your holidays during the day - you’re mad! You don’t deserve a 15euro deal!
Eurotunnel everytime… Just park your bike in gear, sit with it, get off the other end. It’s so smooth all the bike does is gently rock on its side stand. No risk of popping seals, or panel bashing, or falling over, or having big lorry straps scratching your paint like on the ferry. Plus its much quicker… worth the dosh - even if you don’t get a deal!
Tunnel. I’ve done the ferry and it is just generally a bit sh!t and takes ages including boarding and the crossing itself. I’ve only used it when money has become a factor, although last time, we tried to get an earlier ferry and they charged us £60 whereas the Tunnel has let us on earlier at no extra cost.
I’m taking the tunnel 1st time this Sunday and wanna know how much extra time to allow for the road works going on at junctions 11 & 12 on M20? Also where’s a good meeting place after getting off in Calais. I’ve gotta a mate coming down from Netherlands to rendezvous with (like the French) … then we’re off to the Best Biking Roadzz !!! :D:D
