Engine oil-shelf life

So… When i do an oil change ive always got a bit of fresh oil left over… (I use around 3.6 litres out if a 4 litre container)

Over time ive ended up with all these bits of left over oil from various oil changes.

Whats the opinion on combining all the unused remnants to use as ‘fresh’ to use on a future oil change?
Or am i best off just chucking in the scotoiller?

I don’t see a problem if the lid been on. Been underground a very long time before it was bottled :grimacing:
Or try drink a bit, if it makes you sick then don’t put it in the bike.

Isn’t it that if it doesn’t make you sick, don’t put it in the bike, put it in the deep fat fryer?

I cant imagine oil gas a shelf life but then again , I’m no expert in such matters.

Although is it good practice, mixing different types? Or are they all the same?

solution: buy a 2-stroke dirt bike

Yea oil takes ages to deteriorate if it’s stored correctly by that I meant about 20-30 years. There’s no sell by or use by date on any oil. I don’t even think there is a way to determine when it was refined.

Marry it all up and put it in the bike. I’ll have it if you don’t feel confident in putting it in your own bike

Slightly related question, is it safe to store dirty old paraffin in an empty engine oil bottle, or should they not be mixed?

When I do an oil change I start the re-fill process with any remnants I have from the previous oil change

@ Michael its probably safe, ignoring the fire risk. Take it down your local recycle centre following an oil change, why would you want to store it?

I only need a small amount at time for cleaning the chain, so I just need somewhere to put the old stuff until there is enough to take for disposal.

Old oil is perfect to use, it never goes off if the bottle lid is on.  Only brake fluid is limited in life once opened, they suggest two years.

Brake fluid once opened should be used.

Wow I never knew brake has a shelf life :persevere: I’ve been using the same tin since 2007. Has still performed well on bcr and track tho.

brake fluid is hydroscopic.

as long as the lid is put back on it should be fine.

I change my fluid once every 6 months & buy a small bottle of the stuff & throw the remaining away.
