End of KTM at Golding Barn, hello Ducati!

So on Sunday I went to the last ever KTM MX Experience at Golding Barn. My fourth time there, still as good as the first

The (boiling hot) day went as follows

Split into three groups
Quick round the oval to get to grips with being on an MX bike
Another time round, this time with a left and right turn.
First go on small track, first two laps escorted then two laps on our own.
Once you get onto these tracks the bikes and experience become real. I actually also found it easier as you get a wider track.
Second go on small track, about four laps.
Lunch
First go on large track, first escorted then on our own
Second go on large track, unescorted
Final go on large track, this was a shorter three lap ‘wind down’ session.

You are encouraged to take it about 10% easier on the last outing and they said you’ll feel the flow more and enjoy it more. I think they were right.

So, for those of you who have never done one… It’s a great day out to get a feel of Motorcross. The bike sliding under you, the sound and vibrations, the foot out for balance and the jumps… Feeling like you’re doing 150mph when it’s probably closer to 45-50. And you’ll most likely feel it next day, it’s a good workout!

Barry, his son Ryan and friend Sam run a very decent day. There’s good banter, some useful advice and a few laughing moments.

It’s not a riding school like California Superbikes where you will be given lots of advice and tips. It’s an experience day. You are there to learn the basics and that’s all they’ll really advise. Most people are beginners on off-road but there’s occasionally some who know their stuff. Generally everyone was very respectful of each other and no crashes happened.

Typically.ive always struggled with nerves until the last two sessions. This time because I had just done a day a month ago, I got into the flow straight away. Enjoyed it so much more.

As of next week, there will be no more KTMs there. They’ve signed a new contract with Ducati and for now have the only Ducati MX bikes in the country. This is the first ever MX Ducati has produced and they looked pretty impressive.

The Ducati bikes they will have are all 450s but Barry and team are doing work to manage the output to make them ok even for novices.

Having first done this day on a Yamaha (about 10-12 years ago) and three times on a KTM, I’m looking forward to go back and try the Ducatis. I only get a day here and there to ride so it keeps my addiction at bay, so to speak, without breaking the bank.

The photos of me weren’t that good but hey ho
