DRZ Upgrades

Hello Peoples.

I have been looking around at replacing the spockets on my DRZ 400. As standard, I think the have a 15T in the front and 44 at the back. I want more acceleration for enduro etc… I have found a 14T- 47T. Do you recon this will give me that responsive acceleration? Or would you recommend other?

hi brett and welcome to LB…

dont drop the front sprocket size to 14t the sizes you stated are on the ‘E’ model DRZ and if you put a 14T on the S model you’ll likely have issues of the chain eating it’s way through the slider on the swingarm and then the swingarm itself.

the gearing on it now was a good compromise for on/off road considering the 5 speed box, most of the green laning i done was usually in 2/3,going up a few teeth on rear will make it a bit more responsive but more gear changing

DRZ400sm (supermoto) has 15/41 stock.
It’s not unknown for people to go -1 on the front OR +3 on the rear.

I have a 14T front sprocket waiting to maybe go on someday.
If you mostly ride B-roads then it’s worth considering.

told ya to ask Brettyboo :hehe:

A couple of basic bits:

As an idiot rule of thumb, try enlarging the rear sprocket before going for a smaller front sprocket. (Less chain wear, maintains chain clearances.)

Simple arithmetic:
DRZ standard 15/44 equals a 2.93333 ratio.
Never up the ratio in stages greater than about 5% at any one time, so 2.93333 up 5% equals about 3.08 ratio.
Keeping the 15T front sprocket needs a 46T rear sprocket.
Is that available?

If not and you have to change to a 14T front sprocket, try the standard 44T rear sprocket first. (That’s a 7% jump.)

That combination works well on my 650 Aprilia.

REMEMBER: If you have a speedometer working from the gearbox (electronic or mechanical) any change of chain drive gearing will throw the display out.

Bypass the ‘simple arithmetic’ by using:

I think I’ll stick with the arithmetic, it’s a lot simpler.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!

I gave up on that website!

Thanks bud. I think I will jump a few teeth on the back sprocket and see how i get on. Thanks for your help. I will no doubt be asking for more help in the future.

Thanks old guy for the tip. I think there is a 47T on ebay for a couple quid. But I will make sure not to change the front sprocket just yet. Appreciated.

If you change sprockets, you’ll need to change the chain as well

Probably not THAT neccessary on a 37bhp bike thats going to spend its life in the sand and mud :satisfied:

It is if you put a larger sprocket on as the chain won’t be long enough…gearing commander would tell you if it’d fit, but apparently it’s too complicated :stuck_out_tongue:

Said the man who even cleans the bolts and nuts on his bike :stuck_out_tongue:

Different type of bike

They’re both Suzukis though, and will rust before your eyes!

Suzuki’s? Built to last, compared to Italian bikes.

Note Serrisan’s post. If you up-size a rear sprocket you will almost certainly need a couple of extra links in the chain so unless you have spare stuff knocking around, get the cheapest new one you can find to sort out what gearing you are going to settle on.

I did that and , as it was temporary, used a split link as a chain joint. Carried a spare split link or two and suitable tools with me for any OH SH*T moments if the link failed. With only 50 bhp (Surely they jest. Maybe 50 at the flywheel.) the cheap chain and original split link are still looking o.k. after 3K miles.

Bargain from Wemoto.
