Don’t really fancy riding 2 hours up the M1 anyone got any good routes up there.

Take the A5 upto Rugby then keep going via Hinckley, Tamworth,Swadlincote,burton-upon-tren to Derby :slight_smile:

Or Take the A6 Luton, Bedford, Kettering, Leicester, Derby :slight_smile:

At the A5 A38 interchange take the A38. That’ll take you all the way to Derby. But be warned it takes twice as long.

Or you can take the A40 to Oxford, just after turn on the A44, and follow that to A3400 at Southcombe. Take that till it joins up with the A429 and the follow that till the B4455 (A429 & B4455 make up part of the Fosse Way).

It will take you to the A5 just short of Hinckley, follow the A5 to the A444 into Burton Upon Trent, and then turn off onto the A514. That will take you straight into Derby.

The second route will definitely take longer, but it is a far more interesting ride, and till take you on Roman and medieval roads, and a across Swarkstone Bridge with is a Grade 1 listed structure.

A5 deffo the most interesting way.

A1, back roads St Neots to Stamford[1], Left to Oakham, Melton Mowbray, Donington, then A50 to Derby.

[1]There’s numerous alternate routes between St Neots and Oakham via places like Corby. They’re all good.

Personally I have had a lot of success with this

In his book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Robert Pursig explains the secret of finding a good riding route as finding roads that once joined your start point and destination but that have been ‘replaced’ by a motorway. These roads are usually in good shape, and fairly direct, but without the traffic that is now trundling along the motorway.
