Donington Park (GP Circuit): Trackday report and pictures

Well, today was the Donington trackday on the full GP circuit. First time on track for (a more than nervous) Jeanette and first time at Donington for my brother and a mate.

It all started last week when we took Jeanette’s VFR400 to be looked at, since it was running like a bag of spanners. Several hours of investigative work and a rejetting resulted in a healthy 64.7bhp. See chart below (look at the appalling curve and power before - the blue lines).

With that sorted we were ready for the track. Since my trailer will only take one bike and since it had to take my (non road legal) track bike, this left Jeanette with the task of riding her VFR there. Well that didn’t happen! So, 5am this morning we got up, I donned my leathers while she got in the nice warm car! 110 miles of cramped VFR400 hooning later we were at the track. I say cramped; I now refer to her bike as the “mini moto”.

We met up with the others and got ready, clear blue skies overhead. It seemed that Inters were over subscribed, so I was bumped into Fast… out on track with the Phase One Endurance team (World Endurance champions '93, '00, '03)

The weather didn’t last long, heavy(ish) winds bringing dark clouds overhead. Two sessions in, at 11:30 it rained enough to soak the track. It then proceded to drizzle for the next couple of hours, just enough to ensure the track didn’t dry. Then, around 3pm the skies cleared again and the sun came out, meaning that the last two sessions were bone dry… decent result, considering!

No-one in our group had any “moments”, which was good. I had a couple of slides in the wet, but nothing major. One of the Phase One guys binned it at Copse on the first lap out in the same session, so no-one’s infalable. Anyway, some pictures…

Good stuff Silver! The dyno graph is the best I’ve seen in terms of improvement, I can’t believe the original ‘curves’! Donington Park is a fav of mine after doing it last year with B and a few other friends. I really want to go back after watching Pedrosa trump everyone there last month.

Time for wets now mate, no? Track bike looks good, I’m quite envious.

Wow - check out that wet photo - very scary!

Gorgeous looking VFR too!

.

I stupidly left my wets at home, so I was left with road tyres. Worked out alright in the end though - like you said I’d have swapped my wheels at least twice during the day otherwise. It was quite funny trying to stick to the half metre wide dry line in the session straight after lunch though! I am pretty poor in the wet so I tried to treat it as learning sessions.

There were a few crashes, but with the changing conditions I’m surprised more people didn’t get caught out.

What bike/group were you on/in?
