Do any of you pre-emptively replace clutch cables? Got a bike with 11k on the clock on the original cable - looks ok, it’s a bit shiny where the metal has thinned out at the end that sits at the clutch cover, but still has plenty of adjustment left in it but seeing as they don’t cost much I feel like popping a new one on rather than having it go ping at some point in the future.
Or do you wait until you run out of adjustment or it’s obviously looking frayed.
If it’s fraying I would change it, mine went earlier this year. I’d already bought a new cable but didn’t get round to changing it. Luckily it had a couple of strands left and I could nurse the bike home.
Funny this came up actually, my mates clutch cable on his blade snapped last week but it did have 30k on the clock. I change mine at 15k miles and like others have said its pretty cheap to replace.
Ninj, never doubt your own wisdom
If teenagers can be doubt to maintain your pride and joy,
surely you are man enough to learn beyond their simplistic “wage love”
If it’s fraying definitely replaced it promptly as it will go. Ginger did half a rideout with no clutch so you can make it home. It’s not fun to ride with no clutch though.
When I was couriering I used to run a spare cable along side the original one just in case, Probably a bit over the top for day to day use. You can still ride most bikes without a clutch cable if needs be it just takes a bit of know how.
When I’ve had cables I’ve just done them each spring just in case. A new clutch cable is a really cheap and easy upgrade for any bike and a broken one is far more annoying than the replacement is costly.
ooh - I’ve got a hydraulic clutch - well get you - you must be so superior - your genetics are obviously better and you will get laid more than me . . .
Well as it happens I’ve still got another bike with a hydraulic clutch so there!
