Do you have breakdown cover for your bike?

Pretty simple really. Who has breakdown cover?

I’m looking at insurance costs for a new bike. I’ve always had breakdown cover in the past but never used it so should I ditch it to save money? If I go abroad I’ll probably just buy cover for the time I’m away, if that’s possible, so I’m just talking about UK cover really.

rats, i should read question to the end… i have.
do not ditch it, as soon you do it somethings will go wrong, Murphy’s law.
R

Sod’s law you will breakdown if you don’t have.

Talking from experience!

money well spent i reckon.

The plan is to keep my bike in such a condition that I am confident it won’t break down.

I don’t have breakdown cover but would get it if I didn’t spend my money on other ****…

Free RAC with IAM

AA with my bank account

Pretty sure that I get breakdown as part of my insurance policy and they wouldn’t let me remove it for some abstract reason to do with leaving my bike, broken in obscure places but I don’t really remember, think it’s Green Flag.

I’d say I was covered in most circumstances, although the cover is basic in all instances.

I have AA cover and failing that I have the works inbuilt rescue service.

Breakdown also covers punctures…

Not always

I got a puncture in the works van on the M25, would have had it sorted except the puny scissor jack supplied by Renault bent and buckled under the strain. RAC tended as per company membership and charged £90 to fit the spare wheel, even though I did most of the job myself. Cheeky feckers I’m with the other lot now, nothing to do with alcohol consumption

had rac and they were very good but when it came to renew they wanted to charge me 40% more… i declined and got rac with homestart from mce when i got my insurance…

used rac once for a puncture on the gsr and once when the tail tidy on my ktm snapped leaving me without plate and hanging rear lights and no tools!

both times they fixed it for me there and then so i could get out on.

also used breakdown twice through other insurance companies… once they were good collecting me when my tyre blew out as i was overtaking on the a40, the other they took 2.5 hrs to get to borough and then tried to charge me to take me home… be careful of the breakdowns that have a limit on distance through insuranbce… i found that they can’t even fix a flat motorbike tyre as they’re geared to cars and will only offer the 10 mile recovery

AA free with my bank account as above, I have used the hell out of it in the past! (recovery from Hayling Island to Egham on a Sunday night - he reckoned would bill to the AA over £300)

If you want breakdown for abroad the tunnel offers it as an addon for various durations up to 14 days I think.

AA, Not used them much though, despite driving old bangers.

BTW you can claim a free bike mag with them at the moment http://www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/motorbikes/index.jsp

For my premium MCE included roadside cover (including punctures and battery’s fault) with RAC.
I do have an European cover but not for breakdown. I asked how much it was to extend the breakdown to EU and it sounded so ridicolous that I don’t even remember it :ermm:

No, don’t need it. I have a kawasaki which never breaks down

Don’t have breakdown cover. Only take out breakdown cover when I go abroad.

always have breakdown cover, come with my insurance

Found it bloody usefull, from coming out to flat tyres in the morning and being recovered to get it sorted to being taken home from Haverhill near Finchingfield to east london, fair old way, but didnt cost me anything.

RAC with MCE insurance and AA with Lloyds, never had to use it for the bike

AA comes free with Carole Nash

Carole Nash tend to quote me about £1K more than other insureres!

Think I’ll probably stick with it then if I can find a decent quote for the new bike.

Thanks for the input guys

I have AA cover for me instead of against a set vehicle - this covers me in any car i am driving or passanger of and any bike i am riding or pillion (Pillion will never apply  ) i took out Homestart, roadside relay, stay mobile (accomodation/transport costs or hire car until car is repaired) and repair cover (£500 of repairs covered) £20 per month, it went up to 21.50 a month when i added Tiggi to my policy so she has the same cover.

Used it three times in three years, the hire car service was great - they came to my house and established the overheating was caused by the head gasket, dropped the car off at one of their approved repairers & then took me to the hire car firm at heathrow and i was in the hire car within 1hour of them arriving at my house - they also paid £500 of the £600 head gasket repair bill!

If you have more then one vehicle then i would reccomend taking out cover against yourself rather then a specific vehicle. AA also have an app that sends your location and then calls them so if you don’t know where you are - they will!
