DIY fairing repair

Hi everyone,

an (ex)mate managed to drop my cbr600 off its centre stand. After I’d owned it for less than 24 hours. :w00t::w00t::w00t:

Apart from a broken brake lever, scuffed mirror and dented can, the fairing the indicator’s mounted on is cracked. Rather than paying an arm and a leg for someone else to plastic weld it (I’m a newbie, who knows what’s gonna happen in the next 6 months!), someone told me the other day I could just use a soldering iron to melt/seal the crack.

Anyone else done this before? Could you use something like a car fibreglass repair kit on the inside of the fairing?

My main aim is to repair the crack (another tap and the indicator is coming off) rather than repainting for the time being…

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Sam.

Just use gaffa tape thats what my bikes held together atm

I have been told you can use a soldeing iron and some plastic weld stuff so and going to try that on my bike before i put it back on the road in december after getting my self banned for six months

happy trying and if it goes well can you let me know please

If it’s a hairline crack superglue gel works a treat.

I’d quite like to know how to plastic weld tho, just in case… :Whistling:

Try a soldering iron, gently melt the back of the crack and use a cable tie the same way you would use soldering wire. Should do the job.

What he said but i’d use a piece of scrap ABS as filler rod rather than a cabletie.:)Cable ties are made from a Polyamide called Nylon66 which does not meld well with ABS fairing material. It would produce a weaker joint than if you used ABS.

speak to M9 Performace he was the one that told me how to do it

Cable ties are very handy

Found this thread and thers loads of info online such as this http://www.rubbermat.myby.co.uk/fairing/MySimpleApproachToFairingRepair.htm

I for one feel inspired! Watch this space

For cracks and simple shapes I would use wire-mesh on the rear stuck down with araldite - score the surface criss-cross first.

Evostick PVC Pipe Weld Adhesive works perfectly on fairing plastics. I have a five year old repair on one of my bikes that is still perfect today.

Mate use plastec.

It’s amazing stuff and goes rock hard, can be sanded and painted.

so where can you find/buy plastec?

http://www.plastexexpress.co.uk/ is what you are looking for. I’ve used it quite a bit. Give a shout if you want a hand… I’ll help if I can.

thanks! need to repair a crack in my headlight case

Search for the stuff on Ebay. Sold through there still. Does work well.

And there was me thinking about buying a bit of specialist plastics welding kit.

Good info. guys. Thanks.
