I parked in my favourite bike bay just north of Oxford st. the other morning, but my favourite spot, just in front of a sign post (because I can chain the bike to it) was already occupied by another bike. My chain is not long enough to reach the lampost unless the bike is parked directly in front of it, so I was mildly dissapointed as I am usually early enough to bag this spot. However I noticed that there was already an unused rusty old padlock chain looped around the sign post, sitting on the pavement (it was not attached to a bike and had just been left looped around the lampost which is quite common in town). The presence of this chain allowed me to loop my chain through it, thereby attaching my bike to the sign post. When I got back in the evening my chain was sitting on the pavement unattached to the padlock chain, which was still just sitting on the pavement around the lamp post as it had in the morning.
I can only think that the owner objected to my looping my chain through his obviously vacant chain, undid his chain and removed my chain from the loop! I know that he hadn’t arrived after me, parked his bike, attached the chain (unlooping mine) and then left again, because the bikes I squeezed between that morning were still either side of my bike.
If he did object to my looping my chain through his - then this seems an unbelievably petty and uncharitable reaction.
I guess the said chain was attached after all and it’s partner objected to you trying to muscle in on his turf!
I can’t believe you thought you could loop through someone else’s chain without even so much as an introduction Sid? What were you thinking man? You could of at least bought them a drink first?!?
I’d hate to think what you’re like on a night out on the pull if you take such a cavalier attitude to using someone else’s chain!!
I obviously crossed the line with this guy! He obviously can’t stand the idea of his chain (which he paid good money for) protecting someone else’s bike (even when it’s not in use!?).
wot if he turned up couldnt park his bike nr his chain cos there were bikes already there but selfishly wanted to use his chain further along so unchained it, chained his bike up and on his return unchained his bike and put it back onto the lamp post?
How dare he not put it back through your chain, wotever next?
I agree - the above is entirely possible - and it’s no big deal - the reason I posted was that it reminds me of the post a few months back regarding riders looping through each others chains for extra security. It would be good if this became common practise (it doesn’t seem to be at the moment).+ I’m making too much of this thing - as my nerves are shredded after a particularly tough week on the work side of things (working from stupid o’clock in the morning to stupid o’clock at night). If I post in this over-sensitive/bizarre fashion in the future it’s due to lack of sleep/long hours which combine to produce paranoia and over-sensitivity! - resulted in some great high speed runs back home on empty roads in the early hours of the morning though! (I haven’t seen those kind of figures on the clock for a while!) I’m going to get some sleep.
