I had a bit of a whoopsie a few weeks ago, where a deer ran out in front of me on the bike.
I had gone up to Caldwell Park for a couple of days on track, went up a day early and decided to go for a road ride with a friend the day before (Saturday 26th april)
I was near Skegness when a deer hit my front wheel and knocked me off. I was knocked unconscious and Air lifted to Hull Hospital and don’t remember anything past lunch. Im told the deer hit my font wheel making it airborne, then my rear hit the deer and also airborne, all while coming out of a corner.
My original injuries were:
7 broken ribs, 2 in 2 places
punctured lung
brain bleed
bleed on my lung
Spleen cat 4 (cat 5 is no longer functioning)
soft tissue damage to knee and shoulder.
I then developed colitis to top it off
I was taken to Hull Major Truma in a helicopter, my first vague memories are from there with my Parter, Brother and his wife next to me (they were phoned from the roadside while the ambulance were dealing with me). The next few days are hazy, i start having proper memories from tuesay the 29th.
I spent 12 days in Hull hospital, before going home for a week.
Last Wednesday I started feeling poorly and unable to do much. Had a temperature of 39.0 (which is very high), thought we would go to A&E to get checked over (after failing at getting a GP appointment all day)
Spent a week in Barnet Hospital with Sepsis, chest infection and a UTI. They also found a bubble of air not in my lung. Antibiotics stabilized me, bubble went down on its own, and I got released today.
Been told i cant ride a bike for 3-6 months as my speen is so fragile, though i have a checkup in 2 weeks so will get some clarification on that then.
I’ve not seen the bike yet, it was originally impounded by the police, then @BigRedS rescued it for me. I’m told the damage isn’t too bad, though.
Big thanks to @me_groovy who went up to Cadwell to bing my van home too.
Im told about photos of the aftermath of the accident, I’m avoiding looking at them till after i have had a chance to talk to a therapist, but happy to share them after that.
Oh my god, this is awful news @Boris! What plain bad luck. So glad you’re out of hospital and on the road to recovery. Are you at home now?
As someone who has also been knocked unconscious after a crash, with no recollection of the event, I fully empathise, and think it’s a good idea to speak to someone about it. It can be a lot to process and deal with. Psychological trauma can come out later on, so best to speak to someone now.
I guess if you’re going to crash - then have a proper one!
In all seriousness sounds a nightmare - hope you get better soon and make a full recovery. Don’t be worrying about yer bike - they are easily replaced.
Thanks for the messages, everyone! It’s been quite something.
Had a change of painkillers recently, so now on Naproxen (and the dihydrocodeine as needed) which is much better. Signed off work for another 4 weeks too (so 8 weeks in total), which is handy
Jeez, that’s some effort on the injuries. Good to hear you’re out of the hospital, Barnet isn’t much fun from our experience with my mother being there for a few weeks. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
