Is it time to start clamping down on their behaviour? They seem to think a red light is merely a suggestion, pedestrian crossings are a nuisance, and to hell with anyone on the road or pavement.
Poor person was probably mowed down on a pedestrian crossing. I’d like if the police did a sting day for cyclists fining them for breaking the law.
They do it all the time in certain junctions in Stockwell/Kennington. Police hiding round corners and jumping out on cyclists that jump the lights of go through pedestrian crossings etc.
They have to learn that if they use the roads they have to abide by the highway code.
Also i’m shocked at the amount of cyclists that still try to undertake lorries turning left, they are either suicidal or totally dumb.
I see this most days riding into town and they don’t stop at red lights or zebra crossings and it makes my blood boil and when i have a go at this idiots they just say what of it, maybe i might swerve to miss something and knock one of these twats over if they do something like that again.
From that report, why not arrest every tourist that doesn’t know whether to look left or right before crossing the road? There’s not a lot there to make a judgment. (arrest, not conviction)
I don’t have a problem with cyclists breaking the laws. I do have a problem with them being stupid.
What’s amazing is that they don’t feel more vulnerable. Perhaps we need a law that bans helmets and gloves so that it hurts more when they fall off, hit something or are hit. /s
They should do away with the green box at junctions. Really annoys me when a cyclist plants himself in front of me there, I end up wishing he would jump the red so he’s not in my way when the lights turn green.
It’s interesting that female cyclists are much more likely to stay to the left and obey the traffic lights, which sadly means they are usually the ones who get squished by the left-turning lorries.
Sorry to hear about the pedestrian. Does anyone here know what happened? Article doesn’t really give enough info to base an opinion on.
Some people don’t give cyclists any options either though, I know people will cross out infront of cyclists expecting them to move or dodge the pedestrians. There are indeed awful cyclists out there who flaunt all by-laws of the road but there’s also lot of drivers and pedestrians who don’t understand that cyclists are road vehicles and should be treated so by everyone, riders and non-riders included.
My mate - who cycles into London - explained to me that one of the reasons cyclists get in front of us at lights - is because if they sit behind us, they are directly behind the exhaust pipe - forcing them to breathe in the poisonous waste gases of our engines.
I now have more sympathy - e.g. if I was on a push bike i’d do the same thing.
This is very true ^. Once nearly got blown off my push bike from sitting too close behind a ducati streetfighter at a set of lights These days I tend to stay behind motorbikes because I know how annoying it is when cyclists get in front of me when I’m on the kawasaki.
Am bored and will discuss, I cycle as parking is easier in westminster and I want to eat more pies and be less of a fat ****.
As you will know from your training you must dominate your road space to be seen and registered by other road users, there are alot of idiot cyclist who have no idea of road craft, these are the ones that you remeber and the prtty lycra clad ones.
Yes I jump red lights WHEN i deem it to be safe, in the end I’m going to be the one that gets the hospital trip. Stopping can mean the twat behind me in his metal box trying to drive through me. PS I dont wear a helmet but do wear glasses as debriss in the eyes is annoying.
Also asl (green box) is for cycles not motorbikes yet. Remember these pedal bound idiots seem to get alot of say for so few road users look at the bus lane stuff.
in cycle into town and i think everyone should have to do a CBT style test and have a mirror on the right hand side, i could not ride without it and it drives me mad when when they do not check there shoulders properly.
There seems to be some sort of action taken re cylcists recently.
For example I got pulled over yesterday on the Mall and given a chat about cyclists. in terms of what they want motorists to know.
they would then also got to Traf Square to pull over loads of bikes and let them know what we (motorists) want cyclists to know.
As Im without a motorbike at the moment I sometimes ride to work and I must admit that I do go throught the odd red light if I can see theres nothing coming (im not completely suicidal yet) - if Im not sure I do still stop.
When pulling up at traffic lights though I sit at the side so Im not in the way when the lights go green & so I can look at the bikes that pull up
Its funny going along Cannon Street - I used to rev my engine to warn pedestrians, now I’ve got a bell…
I thought this post had been resurrected from 19-god knows when.
Cyclists jumping the lights? No never - but I’m sure on a magical day in the not so distant future, all us cyclists will obey the letter of the law, stopping at red lights in their green boxes wearing all the correct protective clothing, and on that day us motorcyclists will all be wearing leathers, have the correct size number plate, never ever going above the speed limit, or rev the nuts out of out road legal cans, or gamble on amber lights and all will be perfect. But until then some of us may need to mind our own business and concentrate on getting ourselves home safely.

Just going on the content of that article for a moment, surely the greater number of deaths caused by things like cars and bikes means those are far more overdue a clamp down?
The other thing to note is…Camden. This is the same as Central London, pedestrians are lethal. They walk out, don’t bother looking, run out from between buses.
The number of times I have been a hairs breath away from running down a pedestrian in London is frightening…I have hit one guy in East London cause I just couldn’t stop in time, fortunately I was filter and it wasn’t too fast.
What I am saying is, don’t be so quick to blame the cyclist until all the facts are known, pedestrians, especially in places like camden and central london are at least as dangerous as cyclists.
