cutting concrete for ground anchor

 Hi guys,

I want to fit a flush mounted ground anchor in a garage floor. Something more or less like this…

http://www.yanchor.com/

Having fitted a bolt down anchor years ago I know hardest part will be cutting the sizeable hole in the concrete floor required to position and fit the product.

Has anyone fitted something similar themselves and have any advice with regards to cutting the hole?

Potential tools I was thinking to cut the hole of are…

  1. 9inch angle grinder with some diamond blades. Will get pretty dusty but should do the job providing the concrete is not too deep.

2.Rent a concrete road breaker to break out the hole

  1. Rent a core drill.

4.Hammer drill to drill out the hole. (Im not really up for this as it will take forever and need loads of drill bits)

I know there used to be a guy on here called anchor man who provided a service of installing these but i would like to have a go myself.

I would hire out a concrete grinder.
Cut the size of the hole and have a clean finish on top.

Then use a hammer breaker to break up the concrete.

Hss are pretty expensive for hiring out tools.
Google some local hire firm around where you live.

And well you know the rest.

Good luck.

Hmmm. How do you intend to clean the junk out from the Y-Anchor, that will inevitably fall down there?

If you compare the cost of hiring the equipment you need, and take into account your time and then compare that to contracting in The Anchorman, it may better to get the professional in to do the job.

You need a proper hammer drill and probably just one proper drill bit, although I always buy my drill bits in multiples so I have a spare should things go pear shaped. So what’s proper?

I have done exactly what you intend with this Dewalt 2kg SDS plus hammer drill Other drills are available, the general rule is if its an SDS drill its probably a proper drill and up to specification for drilling holes in to concrete. Well worth the £90 investment if you’re seriously into you’re DIY or you can hire a SDS hammer drill on a daily rate.

If you’re a lazy boy a pack of these SDS plus chisel set to rake out the hole after you’ve drilled the outline with a couple of these Titan SDS plus drill bit 10 x 210mm and these Erbauer SDS plus drill bit set may be useful too if your buying your own drill. Alternatively you may want to give it a go with an old school club hammer  and cold chisel, power to your elbow and either way don’t forget the goggles and gloves.

Tip of the day, dig out a small hole with a rough edge slightly wider at the botom and just big enough to take the anchor. Fill in and tamper down with a fast setting postcrete

I have a big breaker I could lend you and cutter with a diamond blade
Or you could core drill the hole and break out the bits with a small breaker which I also could lend you

That’s no joy. Proper job is to get your own tools so you can slowly, slowly month by month, year in,  year out demolish and rebuild the house

I found a local diamond drilling company who popped along and drilled the holes for £20

Tried a SDS hammer drill and concrete bit but it could only get so far as the builders who built the garage appeared to have put some seriously strong shit under the garage floor!

r_o_b where are you?

If I was a gambling man I'd wager you hit some rebar there Curtis.

@ Rob - When digging out a hole in the garage floor you should also take into consideration that the floor will have a DPC, therefore line the dug out hole with a liquid bituminous DPC or similar before filling it in again.

Great tips national treasure many thanks.

Its a good an excuse as any to buy some new tools to add to the collection that ill no doubt make future use of.

The club hammer and chisel suggestion made me laugh, you forgot to mention lots of swearing would be required to make that one go smoothly
