Had a little mishap with the fz and all the coolant in the overflow reservoir is gone. I poured some distilled water in for now but should probably top it up with some proper stuff.
The manual says:
“Recommended antifreeze: High-quality ethylene glycol antifreeze containing corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines”
Anyone can recommend a specific product with a link? The colour is pink if it matters.
Also if you own an fz6 post 07, I would greatly appreciate a picture of how the reservoir is attached on the left mount/bracket. Mine seems to have broken off and not sure which spare parts I need.
If I remember right your FZ6 has an R6 engine, even though it’s slightly detuned for more midrange you should still be mindful what coolant and/or oil you use.
In my R1 I use the official Yamalube coolant you get from Yamaha dealers for their sports bikes, it’s pre-mixed so just pour in.
Water boils and turns to steam at 100 degrees celsius, I don’t know how warm your bike coolant gets but my fans kick in at around 104 degrees so water isn’t ideal.
Coolant is mostly water anyway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifreeze) - but the system is under pressure which means it can run over 100 without turning to steam.
Also:
“Pure ethylene glycol has a specific heat capacity about one half that of water. So, while providing freeze protection and an increased boiling point, ethylene glycol lowers the specific heat capacity of water mixtures relative to pure water. A 50/50 mix by mass has a specific heat capacity of about 3140 J/kg C (0.75 BTU/lb F) three quarters that of pure water, thus requiring increased flow rates in same system comparisons with water. Additionally, the increase in boiling point over pure water inhibits nucleate boiling on heat transfer surfaces thus reducing heat transfer efficiency in some cases, such as gasoline engine cylinder walls. Therefore, pure ethylene glycol should not be used as an engine coolant in most cases.”
Yea I went down to Infinity on Sunday but their parts dept was closed so I couldn’t buy any. Also the Yamalube stuff isn’t pink like the one in my rads, should I be worried or does it not matter?
Yes thats the stuff. Bacons kawasaki in Ilford sell it for £4 a litre and they recommend it to all their customers including ZX10’s so will be fine for you
