computer help please?? network router problems

I have just bought myself a laptop and a wireless router but i am having trouble getting it to work

i have a desktop pc in my spare room and i want to be able to hook up to the net on my laptop via a wireless network, now when i went to install the router into my desktop pc (which is the main connection to the net) it flashs up a message that i should check my network card?

have i got to buy something else or do i need to ‘activate’ the network card in my pc?

and how do i find out if my pc has got a network card?

many thanks

Would need loads more information to help ya, I run a part time PC repair business. However would look for a BT phone style socket on rear of PC with lug on long side as opposed to short side. This would be an RJ45 / Ethernet socket.

If ya have one and it is not working could be hardware fault, could be as simple as not correctly seated into PCI slot on motherboard. If ya need to get one they are about £10 from most PC hardware shops.

If you are running XP you may be able to help resolves through the trouble shooters. If ya need further advise ya can PM me.

How are you connecting the router to the PC, wireless or ethernet?

ethernet cable

how can i find out if my pc has got a network card installed?

Hi mate if it has wireless capability then you should be able to connect without the wilreless card …

it should say thi son the laptop somehwere…

if not and you do need a card then your looking arouhn £40 for one ( well for a decent one)

IE a belkin 54g or something like that .

Look in Control Panel and on the case of the PC PM me if ya need advise.

Hey there mate, I’m a professional IT geek and I’m happy to look into it for you for the price of a pizza and a beer perhaps. Where do you live? If it’s not too far I could come round and sort it for you. I’m in Camden.
