I thought I’d post this up for some other opinions. I’m looking at changing jobs and it will mean a longer commute. I currently travel from Ruislip to Kings Cross everyday, about 16 miles each way or 30-50 mins depending on my mood/traffic.
The new Job is in Milton keynes, just off the M1. The commute would be 41 miles each way, about 50 mins to an hour. In my mind the commute would be less stressful but more boring (might get an MP3 player), but more options to have a fun longer non-motorway route when it takes my fancy. I’ve worked out it’ll cost me about a tenner more a day in travel. I’ll be commuting against the flow of the rush hour so it shouldn’t be too bad.
Anything else I should consider? I’ve mostly made up my mind it’ll be ok but always worth thinking out aloud.
As others have said, don’t under estimate the M25. Remember too that Friday afternoons are a pig and you will filter for miles and miles. Not to mention the added danger of that much traffic not looking anywhere but where they are going.
I guess the key would be to sometimes vary your route to keep it interesting, like using the St Albans/A5 option occasionally. If you end up doing a lot of motorway work it might be wise to get a bike with a decent fairing, unless you already have one of course.
I wouldn’t go on the M25, I’d jump on the M1 at Watford. The bike has a decent fairing so that’s ok. Just wondering how bad the traffic is in rush hour on the M1 travelling the ‘wrong’ way.
I might move up there once I’m past the probation period but need to consider all options.
