close shave with a fuel pump

How lucky am i… went to fill up the 7r this morning on the way to work took out the nozzle popped it in tank and started filling her up,for some strange reason i felt compelled to look at the nozzle instead of the meter on the pump,so i looked at it and saw BLACK **** its diesel so quickly stopped pumping took the nozzle out gupping diesel all over the tank, luckily it only pumped out .87 of a litre so i filled the tank to the brim with the ‘‘correct’’ fuel and hoped for the best… well the 7r runs ok-ish no smoke but runs a tad rough off the throttle and struggled slightly on hard acceleration… well another tank full should get things back to normal…

damn… costly mistake.

Keep an eye, I know Diesel cars are more forgiving than petrol vehicles, so if you put some petrol in a diesel you can get away by filling up on diesel…

Almost 1 liter of diesel in a small engine could be quite bad. Make sure you keep an eye and if any trouble take it to the garage, might need a system flush… or something:):)

Oh sh1t! This is always in the back of my mind when I fill up - could happen to anyone - it was only a small amount so hopefully it should be ok.

yep fingers crossed:Whistling: the full tank should have diluted it to some extent so by the next fill up it should be ok… least the carbs will get a clean:D

yep youre not the first and you defo wont be the last:P I done it last year 5 ltrs before i relised, the nice man from the AA said its quite regular with pe`ps with diesel cars, by the way the bike was a brand new Blackbird:w00t:

if it was me I would rather put diesel through my bike injectors than risk petrol ruining the precision engineering of my diesel injector pump! you are very unlikely to do serious damage the way round it happened to you, some years ago my mother managed to 1/3 fill her micra with diesel Doh! anyway the main dealers said “gloom and doom, you will need a new cat for the exhaust”! the local mechanic said “Balls! run it for a couple of tankfulls and bring it in and we’ll put it on the analyser”, did that and she sold the car 2 years later with the same cat!

Er… NO! How wrong can you get?

Diesel engines depend on the shi**y, slimy stuff to lubricate things like pumps, metering units and injectors. Petrol just kills those because of the lack of oilly stuff.

Diesel in a petrol engine is pretty much just a bloody nuisance. Mostly it will just stop and you’ll spend a lot of time getting rid of the stuff and theneverything will, well, should be o.k.

Keep riding, keep diluting with the real thing, use an octane booster if necessary and just wash the whole stuff through.

Met a guy who reckoned that sticking a can of lighter fluid in did the job better. Upped the octane rating, negated to oilly stuff.

That is firmly your choice to try.

Thanks for posting the link, very interesting.

Love it where it says “you have to be pretty determined and patient to misfuel with diesel”. Do you reckon “determined and patient” is a euphemism?

I put methylated spirit through the carbs of my Yamaha R6 after draining them and the tank when I accidentally filled up with diesel. I left each of the four carb float bowls full with spirit.

I also mixed the petrol with redex fuel enhancer.

The bike was a bit lively after that and the exhaust fumes smelt funny, but everything worked as normal afterwards.

You will be fine just keep topping up a usual a little diesel in a petrol engine wont hurt it at all !! just a bit of added lube.

Petrol in diesel is far worse as others have said but you can still get away with it.

I work with diesels hgv’s so have some experiance just the other day one of the drivers put diesel into a HYBRID PIRUS bran new lol funny times.

You have a lot of luck today mate!! :w00t:
