Probably not that bad actually… unfortunately they often are “defanged” which means eventually they die, but it means they’re absolutely safe to handle even if they think they can still whoop your ass!

The fangs get pulled, and ultimately the poison glands dry up… for some reason this kills them, but zoos in far off places don’t normally give much a of a toss about this level of animal welfare, they just go find more and defang them instead.

On reflection, your explanation seems quite plausible and therefore I am not that pleased with myself for posting and giving exposure to this.
