Chains,Padlocks, disc locks, ground anchor... Is it worth it?

I have a Steal door garage surrounded by neighbours and on a private road. This morning the day is lovely and I thought on take my ZX6 for a ride as it’s parked for over two months now.

I get so frustated when I go to garage and have to undo all those chains, padlocks, disc locks… I got 4 heavy dutty chains on it plus a very thick steal cable and one disc lock…

My question is: Is it worth the hassle? If they want my bike and they get to the point to brave my neighbours, come in the private road with a van and brake into the garage door? They obviously will take it anyway…

I find a pain deal with all this locking… Is it worth it guys?

Woah !!!

You mean you’d sleep better with it NOT locked down??

Err, think there’s your answer big guy.

Would your elaborate precautions stop it being nicked? Well probably not, but then again, very little could stop it. That chain stall at the NEC (ALMAC?) where they were destroying all the common chains was an eye-opener, and we know how little alarms do to put them off.

When the 675 arrives, I’ll be getting another chain from the aforementioned monster chain company, and a tracker with phone ringing abilities, rather than an alarm.

Hopefully the landlord will be relaying the concrete outside and I’ll be asking for a garage door blocker thing.

So I’ll be the same as you !

That IS a lot of locks and keys, but if you don’t use the bike that much it’s not too bad.

With a bike your using everyday, on and off it - it’s a bit different.

But there is only so much you can do till you reach the point where you can walk away from the bike and put it to the back of your mind, and do what your gonna do. Bikes are about freedom, not being tied to a ball and chain!

My bike is garaged (with extra dead bolt locks, see pic), and ground anchored.

Used to alarmed disc lock it as well but dont use it at home anymore. Too much hassle as every morning have to take disc lock off, take reminders off, take packback off, put disc lock and reminders in backpack then put packback on again. Then reverse the process when i get home. Now all i do is open garage, undo ground anchor chain and jump on bike! Plus as you say if a theif gets through the rest the disc lock wont stop him, i knew that before also, but just hoped it would piss him off a little extra esp. as it was alarmed

Also now got that datatool snitcher device…what a pain in the butt But i think with a little adjusting and greater understanding about how it works it could become very useful. It would be especially good for those storing the bike in a garage for extended periods ( Cezar ).

I don’t know this device Fullthrottle??? Can you tell me more about it?

Basically its a device that texts your phone when your bike has been moved and also acts as a tracker so you can log on to the interent and see where your bike is. It can work with an already existing datatool S3 or S4 alarm ie. if the alarm is triggered you will be texted as well, or on its own.

Ive only had it for a short period of time so have a lot more experimenting to do, but its not really as simple as what it says on the box!

Firstly it only has 2 settings…sensitivity low or sensitivity high. Why they didnt have a sesnitivity medium is beyond me Hence what i was saying earlier. If your keeping the bike garaged then sesnitivty high is ideal as if ever the bike was even slightly moved you know its baseball bat time.

Secndly when the device is activated and deactivitaed can be a prob as its different to the alarm. ie. you can switch movement detection off on the alarm, and you have 30 secs or something with the alarm after you switch the ignition off etc… but none of this affects the snitcher. As soon as the ignition is off the snitcher is on so if you dont keep the ignition set to on you can get a lot of false texts (each of which costs you atleast 10p). The only way round this eg. if you want to clean your bike or something is to send a text to the snitcher switching its movement detection off and then send another text to switch back on again after (extra cost). But for certain things, such as refuelling, it would be a bit of a pain doing this so you just have to be v.careful you dont nudge the bike and try not to touch the tank with the nozzel too much as the vibrations will trigger it.

The location thing though is what has annoyed me most. Firstly its £30 per year. Then you have to buy credits to check the location of your bike. On top of which its not accurate, when i tried it once it was prob half a mile out and so to get to it before the thief rips the snitcher out would require a huge amount of luck! Also the snitcher goes into sleep mode after an hour. Once its in sleep mode the location device only shows you the place the bike was the last time you used the location facility.

Dont get me wrong its worth having, but am a bit dissapointed as it should have been better.

Oh one more thing that is really cool. It has an output thing as well so you can control one device of your choice by text. eg. get a siren then you can acitvate/deactivate it by text. Or be more imaginative and you can do things like cut the engine by text or whatever you want really. However again you are limted to the snitcher not being in sleep mode

Humm! I hate alarms… But a track device is not a bad idea!

The only decent thing you can do with your bike is to keep in out of view. That is about the only semi effective method really. No matter how many locks you put on a bike, its not going to stop a profesional bike thief.

Also you just have to be careful your not followed home which has happened a few times to other people and also when near home try to keep a low profile with the bike.

I did hear of someone having there bike stolen when it was all chained up and done to a ground ancor… the works! Woke up next morning it had gone and he didn’t even hear a sound!

Yes, do all those, and add a pack of dogs too… then I will sleep safe at night…

even if they got the bike, the dogs would have the scent and we can hunt them down together…

Like the guys are saying, a determined thief is not going to be deterred by locks and chains, however many you have. But, they might slow him down enough for somebody to get to your garage, if they’ve been awaken by the door breaking.

If you use your bike every day, sure it’s a hassle, but just think how much more of a hassle will it be to lodge an insurance claim and take public transport until you get another bike…

I’m thinking of going to Alaska to get a grizzly bear that I could have chained to my bike. He’d be the perfect pillion as well, being warm and soft. I’d have to get the feeding balance right, though, so that he’d eat anybody trying to come too close to my bike, but not me if I’m sitting in front of him. I’d definitely teach him to eat parking attendants!

Cezar, lets say som1 did want to steal ure bike, at least u have all these locks etc u can say ‘well theres nothing more i can of done to prevent it’

If u didnt bother to chain alrm etc u will kick ureself afterwards as there is always the chance it could of been avoided.

Yes, you are right Thanutz… You all are and I will always keeping it well locked for the sake of my ‘peace of spirity’… Know that I did what I could to avoid it is a phycological confort… But it all doesn’t stop me getting feed up with the amount of keys I got on keyring…
