Car Mechanics - recommmendations

I need to get my car serviced and MOT’d soon, any recommendations of a decent car mechanic that wont try and skank me? I’m in NW London.

Theres a good one near me who wont charge you the earth, but He`s in New Barnet which might be a bit out of your way.

Kwik-fit? Price didn’t seem bad to me when I had to replace the muffler on my exhaust a few weeks ago.

I would not trust them with a robin reliant let alone a nice car…

Your best bet would be an independant as they have to keep a good rep. when you go to places like kwik fit you might get some spotty teenager who is like “I dont care aint my car”

if you can get to brockley go to Kar Klinik Tell them Karl Sent you…

Do not use Twat-fit.

im a tech for vw now in the parts. loads of people, if ya need advise just ask mate. ive been a tech for 11 years. wporked for lotus subaru audi citroen now my final resting place vw

Well I did the last service myself. Plugs, air filter, oil. Replaced my radiator last year too. I could have changed the exhaust myself but when I went to Part co. they said there are two types and they would need to know which one it was, so I would have had to take it off, take it down there, then go home again and fit it. They were quoting about £60. I had it fitted while I was waiting for £66 at Kwik-fit. Why are people cynical about Kwik-fit? Have you actually had bad experience or is it just cynicism? Sure the bloke that fitted it looked like he still had acne but hey. Oily bits on cars aren’t that difficult, its just most of us can’t be arse to get down and dirty to do it ourselves, unless of course you are talking about new cars, in which case the manual says ‘take it to a dealer’ I don’t think it is rocket science.

I used to collect debt for kwit fit, and the stories people told me were un-real it made me feel bad about taking the money from them…

Wheels falling off, not replacing parts they said they had, not doing a proper job and having to go to other places to get it done properly…

independants are the way to go like I say they survive on word of mouth alone…

That is just like any business. You get some ******s that spoil it for everyone but on the whole I think they shouldn’t be discounted.

Sure you can go to an indepentent. I was told about a tyre fitter, Kingston Tyres. When I went there their attitude sucked, told me to go away and come back later. Then about a month later someone pointed out they had fitted the tyre backwards. Had to go back, again they said go away and come back later. So after three visits eventually got it the right way round, didn’t bother balancing though. Just scum. Unfortunately you come across these types now and again.

Anyway, just be careful and don’t take whatever someone says as read. Get someone who knows what they are talking about to double check whatever has been done.

Caveat emptor

after all the issues i have had with my Beast - there is only one place she will go to now. And thats to LB’s very own Roadhog!!

Quick and friendly - and more importantly knows what he is doing!!!

Couldn’t agree more - was born into the motortrade & have often sorted out problems from similar places

I know of a person who worked for a KwikFit type place that sold 5 new tyres to a guy who had a car less than 6 months old on the premise that the compound he had on his car was now illegal He earnt his commission due to someones trusting nature

Yes us small independents are the way to go, reputation carries more weight with us than massive ad campaigns

do you do Mot’s and stuff Grim?

I would really like to take it somewhere that somebody has experience with. I’m a bit gullible

Rushed off our feet The IOM TT is looming

Even my Busa has had to go elsewhere for work as I have no time to do it.

Somebody must be able to recommend someone in your area - come on people

However small tip - don’t tell people you are gullible when you are about to spend money

good point

Great place near me, been ripped off by Ford and Vauxhall dealers in the past, I wont take my cars anywhere else…i trust Steve totally…

Kwik-Fit got 10/10 in my books last monday, up in the Lake District and notice a screw in the tyre, headed into Kendall found a local garage, he took one look kicked the tyre and said needs replacing i can get you it tomorrow, no way was he getting my money, headed down the road and found National Tyres he just said we are too busy come back in 4 hours, went round the corner and found Kwik-Fit, lad had a look said it might need to be replaced but lets see the length of the screw first while we were standing there, sadly it was a long one, he got a quote, ordered new one, popped the spare on and said see you tomorrow about 4pm, so impressed with him i even tipped him…
